Nice pictures for sure. I think what is missing are the local people, shops and restaurants.

Thank you for the photos. Very nice . My wife and I are flying to Rome for a tour of Italy next Thursday but will only be taking my trusty EM5 mkII and the 12-40 2.8.

I would agree. I was looking and feeling something was missing…

…from the set but couldn't pin it down. Outsider has go it right. People and activity -- life.

But very nice pix as they are except that I really don’t like fish eye architectural shots.

Really beautiful pictures! My favourite one is nr. 6, the one of the ceiling covered with frescos!

Lovely images!  It looks like you had a great trip.  I especially like the picture of the Roman Forum at dusk.

Nice...I especially like the last shot.

Noticed you seemed to do what I do.  I sometimes forget to change/reset the f-stop from the wide-open values after shooting indoors.  Your outdoor shots had very high shutter speeds and large apertures.  I did the same thing on the Empire State Building a few weeks ago, but luckily noticed before I left.

How about these?

Thanks for looking and the feedback.

Outsider, I get your point about the first set I posted.  A bit sterile, lacking life.

I was traveling with not only my immediate family (wife + 4 kids), but also a very extended family.  We were often 12-16 people through much of my time in Italy.  I have hundreds of family photos, which I don't think would be a great interest to a broad audience.

That said, I do enjoy "street photography" a lot.  So, how about these for a bit more life?

I enjoyed the second batch much more than the first. (Night and Day).

Very nice! The addition of the street photography shots really contribute to the feel of being in Italy - I myself am much more of an architectural fan but the combination of shots of both people and their beautiful cities really give a more holistic picture of your trip

Just a question - how did you find the 17mm f1.8 on your trip there? I noticed that you used it for quite a few of your photos and took some fantastic shots. I myself am going to Italy during their winter and currently have the 9-18mm f4-5.6 and 45mm f1.8. I'm looking to find another lens (probably either a 17mm or 25mm) but can't decide between the two. Did you find that it would've been too cramped using a 25mm lens?

Thanks for sharing your wonderful photos!

One sees the people in and through the architecture and landscape too - Many nice shots throughout. I found "seeing the procession from afar" evocative. With 5000 photos I imagine that you liked Italy a good deal.

Olivia,

I kept the 17 1.8 on my E-PL7 at all times during this trip (except that I used other lenses when trying to do some Live Comp shots here and there).  I found that the combo was really handy because I always had a capable lens on this body when I needed something on the wider side and for low-light situations.  I generally always carried my messenger-style camera bag, which held my GH4 with long zoom (typically the 35-100 2.8) and my E-PL7 with the 17mm.  This minimized the need for me to change lenses.  Instead, I changed cameras as I needed, which I find easier and faster.

The Oly 17mm may not get the best reviews out there, but I think it is pretty sharp, at least enough for my purposes, especially given the fact that it's fairly fast both in terms of focus speed and aperture.  As a walk around lens, I think it's great and would be a lot more flexible than either the 45 (too long for a lot of situations) and the zoom (too slow for a lot of situations, particularly indoor shots in churches and restaurants).  I don't have a 25mm lens, but I would think the 50mm equivalent might also be too long for some indoor shots.  As they say, if you go wide, you can always crop to get a little more reach later (obviously, giving up some resolution in the process).

I hope this helps.  Have a great trip, and thank you for the kind comments!

Best,

Will

Great shots in both sets!

We’re heading back to Italy with the now grown kids in June and an EM1 instead of a coolpix.  Very disappointed 5 years when we came back and looked at those photos!  12-40, 9-18, brand new 17f1.8 and 75-300 for a looong lens.

And I do tend to match your first set; when my brother sees my flickr stream, he’s always surprised when a few humans sneak in...I’ll have to watch that.
