I'm wondering if uncompressed also means lossless.

I hope they mean lossless compression, uncompressed RAW will be huge.

Shows that Sony is at least listening to people's requests...no matter how long it took

From Wikipedia:

"Lossless compression is a class of data compression algorithms that allows the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed data."

So I hope that it will be a raw in it's pure form.

Have you ever used a ZIP file? That's lossless, you don't loose data, just save space while transporting it.

Losses in image quality are introduced by lossy compression. If there is no compression (that is what "uncompressed" means) then there is no loss in image quality.

Yes, but why include a link to that utterly embarrassing and usually wrong rumours site, when all they do is quote Sony's own site: https://alphauniverse.com/stories/sony-announces-addition-of-uncompressed-14-bit-raw-still-image-capture-for-new---cameras/

That is good news.

Now the next thing they need to add is micro-scanning (pixel shift).

You don't save very much in file size with lossless compression -- maybe 50% at best.

You will still be able to use lossy compression or JPG if you need smaller files. It is good to have the choice.

Sure, they could apply LZW compression to the files and get lossless compressed files. What I wanted to say is that I'd prefer unaltered raw without any compression, but LZW would be good as well, if available.

50% isn't much?

We have 14 bits per channel, and we have three channels. For A7rII that would give:

(42000000 * 14 * 3) / (8 * 1024 * 1024) =~ 210

Each uncompressed RAW file would be around 210 Megabytes in size. Compressing that by 50% is a huge difference.

I saw it on sonyalpharumors first. If I'd seen it on alphauniverse first, I'd provide their link.

That is great news!

It is a pity that my trusty A7II won't be supported.

Could anyone explain to me what is different from the A7II to the A7rII (besides BSI and stacked sensor) that does not allow this feature to be incorporated also?

I guess they know what they are doing since now I feel compelled to buy an A7rII.

The SAR title is misleading (surprise!), Sony will get the firmare update for A7rII. Other cameras are not specified, but they're mentioned. The original announcement stated:

"via firmware update to additional cameras beginning with the recently introduced α7R II full-frame mirrorless model."

You don't know if it will be supported or not, what's said is they'll start by the A7RII.

Really doesn't matter, same words.  Thanks for posting and gives me a better feeling about Sony.  Just hoping the Firmware filters down to the first four sooner than later.

Cheers,

Re: Sony Announces Addition of Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW Still Image Capture for New α Cameras!

Yes its poor wording. It means exactly that its for new models starting with A7rii and A7sii. That means models to come after that and not earlier models like A7r, A7 or A7ii. But I suspect its their lack of good English and they mean starting with the latest models and filtering down to the earlier models later like A7r A7ii A7.

Well I hope that is what they mean!

It may not work well on A7r and A7 as they don't have the latest Bionz X processor I presume which may be required to maintain a certain reasonable speed.
