I agree 70mm isn't enough reach. However, I am looking for a camera that I can grab on the go to shoot my grand babies. I don't always want to go to the trouble of getting out the 6d and the flash and lug it around waiting for that cute moment. A hotshoe isn't a deal breaker. The G16 would be fine especially at its current price. But remember, I AM Pi$$T OFF AT CANON!!

I do admit though I may have to swallow my pride.

Why exactly are you so pi$$t? Was it just the fact that you were waiting for an incremental replacement of the G16 that did not materialize because Canon - like any for profit company - spent its R&D Dollars where it saw the bigger market (large sensor compacts like G1X2, G3X and G7X)? Something like this can happen to you with any camera company. Especially in the compact camera space (Hello Nikon?). I have the G7X which can be a nice replacement. Especially with the darker days ahead of us (assuming you are not from Australia or New Zealand). Lack of a viewfinder may be a bummer but the bright lens in combination with the large sensor are a benefit. Price wise the G16 is of great value though. Alternatively you can go with Fujis X30. The Sony takes great photos but is frustratingly complicated to operate.

Really? I could not replace my G15 with one of those. 70mm is not long enough. The EVF is fiddly. There are less manual controls. There is no hot shoe....

Yep I agree 100%. The G15's 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, hot shoe, viewfinder, and external controls are the reasons I selected the G15 over the other Enthusiast Zoom Compact Cameras at the time.

Have you looked at the Olympus Stylus 1s? 28-300mm constant f/2.8. B&H Photo has the Stylus 1s for $599.99.

Grant the Stylus 1s bigger than G16, but smaller than the G3X and has a large EVF that's received very good reviews.

As discussed in this topic, wonder if Canon, Olympus, and Panasonic will release any new enthusiasts pocketable compacts.

What's wrong with the G7X? Wow.

Did say not anything "wrong" with the G7 X. My reply was to arrow501's post which arrow501 noted wanting a camera with EVF and hot shoe -- G7 X has neither.

I preferred...

For "myself" for a enthusiasts pocketable would want one with built-in EVF and a hot shoe.

Fair enough, but I must say you have some large pockets!  The g7x is not terribly small and is a bit heavy, imho.  I feel the same way about Evfs and hotshoes but had to adjust to life without them.  So at least I do appreciate the slightly smaller form factor as an acceptable compromise.  But I understand those whose preferences differ.  As an aside, I did have a Fuji x100 but had to sell it because its focus was so abysmal.  I must say my g7x is far superior in that regard.

Definitely was not referring to shirt pocket (that's why I have the S110), or if wearing tight jeans.

Can fit G15 in front pocket of standard jeans, and quite easily in light jacket pockets or photo vest. Also have a small case with a belt loop that's a snug fit for the G15 that wears easily without any incumbency to normal activities.

The g7x is not terribly small and is a bit heavy, imho. I feel the same way about Evfs and hotshoes but had to adjust to life without them.

For myself encountered far too many times in bright daylight conditions (especially if getting the shot requires the sun at your back) to be able to see the image on the LCD well enough to compose.

G15 not much bigger than the G7 X:
G7X: 4.06 x 2.36 x 1.57″
G15: 4.21 x 2.99 x 1.57"

Hence for myself, even though I'm a long time Canon compact film and digital camera user, at this time would be a choice between the LX100 or RX100 III -- unless there's an LX100 II with at least net 16 MP image sensor. IMHO the current LX100's 12.7MP image just does not compete well with the 20 MP 1" sensor images at lower ISOs.

Cheers,
Jon

If Canon came out with something like the G7X, but with an EVF like in the Sony RX100III/RX100IV then I would get one. Generally, I like the Canon better and have owned 10 Canon cameras (various DSLRs and digicams) and all have been 100% problem free. I have also owned 2 Sony DSLRs and both were faulty and gave me a lot of grief.

I was at a store yesterday here in Japan and they had the RX100IV and RX100III and G7X side by side. The sizes appear identical. I would have to check the specs to see if one is 1mm bigger in some dimension, but just holding them and eyeballing them they seem to be the same size. The rear LCD of the RX100IV/III was better since it could also tilt downward which is good for overhead shots. If Sony can put an EVF and flash in the RX100IV/III then it sure seems like Canon could do the same. Time will tell if a G7XII has it.

For the same reason one would expect RX100V to have a longer range zoom and at a reduced price.  Can you believe it will be model 5?

All good points, Jon.  I must say I thought long and hard about the RX100III before getting the G7X.  Everyone raves about it and most reviewers prefer it.  And it certainly has some advantages.  Yet, my impression was that the tilt screen had more positions but seems a bit less rugged than the Canon.  Yes, that EVF is also nice but it, too, seemed a bit delicate for pocket carry.  I also thought the longer zoom reach was a suitable offset for the lack of an EVF.  And it was $150 cheaper.  All and all, it was not a clear cut decision but Canon gear has been good to me so I decided to stick with it.

The irony was that what I really wanted was an M3 but they were not selling in the US at that time so I got the G7X as an alternative.  Now I'm waiting to see what the M4 looks like.  Let's cross our fingers that it has an EVF and hotshoe!

Retract EVF, flash, lens

I don't have the RX100III (or G7X), but my recommendation is that before putting it in a pocket you should retract the EVF, flash, and lens. If you don't then I agree that they would be too delicate for pocket carry. Once the EVF, flash, and lens are back in their storage position they are not delicate.

For the G7X I also recommend retracting the flash and lens before putting in a pocket.
