Canon starting to really pi$$ me off!!
2

Earlier this year I lost my G11.  Since March, I have had 3 grand babies. I have a 6D and a 7D but I am finding myself in situations where I want to grab my G11 for convenience.  I have been waiting patiently for the G17.  Early indications suggested we would have a replacement by now.  However, as Canon enthusiasts know, we haven't heard a word from the rumor mill or Canon about their intent.

May be time to move on.  I am considering the Sony RX100 MKIV or the Fuji X30.  If I wasn't ticked off at Canon I would consider the G16 or the long zoom of the G3X.  I am leaning towards the faster lenses though.

Is it possible Canon is waiting on the PIX2015 on October 6th to make an announcement?

Re: Canon starting to really pi$$ me off!!

I feel your pain, even though I still have my G15 I would like to upgrade it to something very similar but with a more acurate viewfinder and a lens starting at 24mm wide angle.

Canon and others who usually announce something around August September time could be waiting for October because there is also the Photo Plus show http://www.photoplusexpo.com

Really? I could not replace my G15 with one of those. 70mm is not long enough. The EVF is fiddly. There are less manual controls. There is no hot shoe. And then there's the price

Canon G7X ? 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8. No EVF, however.

Yep I agree 100%. The G15's 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, hot shoe, viewfinder, and external controls are the reasons I selected the G15 over the other Enthusiast Zoom Compact Cameras at the time.

Have you looked at the Olympus Stylus 1s? 28-300mm constant f/2.8. B&H Photo has the Stylus 1s for $599.99.

Grant the Stylus 1s bigger than G16, but smaller than the G3X and has a large EVF that's received very good reviews.

As discussed in this topic, wonder if Canon, Olympus, and Panasonic will release any new enthusiasts pocketable compacts.

I don't know for sure, since Canon has not said... But I don't believe that a G17 is going to come out in the near (and maybe very far if ever) future. Canon sees a dwindling market for the small sensor G-series cameras, where they wouldn't get an adequate return on their investment. The competition has quit making these cameras also and has moved to large sensor designs. So don't be mad at Canon. They go where the market is and where they can make money.

Canon appears to be spending All of their design time and dollars on the larger sensor Gx-X series of cameras. So is the competition. If I were you I would grab either a G15 or G16 while you still can. I have a G15, which is worlds better than the G11. (I have its twin the G12.) I think if you like the smaller sensor G series cameras, then you would be thrilled with either of these. Faster lens, f1.8-f2.8, with better correction, faster AF, and they give better images than the G11.

This is of course my gut feeling. I have no special inside knowledge. But, if it turns out that Canon does finally come out with a G17, then either of these would be a worthwhile stopping place along the way and give you something to enjoy in the meantime. :)) And it they don't, then you will have the best of the "end of the line". Good luck!

I agree 70mm isn't enough reach.  However, I am looking for a camera that I can grab on the go to shoot my grand babies.  I don't always want to go to the trouble of getting out the 6d and the flash and lug it around waiting for that cute moment. A hotshoe isn't a deal breaker.  The G16 would be fine especially at its current price.  But remember, I AM Pi$$T OFF AT CANON!!

I do admit though I may have to swallow my pride.

so you're #$(*& off at canon because there's no rumors?

it's probably not coming out until next year now you'd think .. and in reality, you could sell your G16 and not be out that much if you wanted to upgrade to the G17 later.

I Love my G15!  It goes everywhere with me, along with my 50D/17-40L, & occasionally, I break out my G7, but the G15 is so much better!

Years down the road when you have no photos of your grand babies from this time in their life you can feel comfort that the reason you don't have any is because you enjoyed so much being Pi$$T OFF AT CANONin 2015.

The G16 is very, very fast due to the Digic 6 processor. Great burst speeds and time between shots even with AF tracking for it's class. I would think it's ideal for active grand-babies, children pets etc.

Seems a strange thing to me to remain angry at a manufacturer, when you could be buying any one of a number available cameras from someone else.

The G7 X is a 1" sensor version of the S120. My theory was that Canon would make a 1" sensor version of the G16.

If they weren't going to do that, they could have updated the G1X II. Nothing there either.

The G16 was announced back in 2013, so they should have done something to update/change/replace it.

(And on the DSLR side, no SL2/150D.)

Don't be such a nut.  G7X is better than your dreams; apparently too good for you.

Chill.

I pretty well have to agree with Buhanan's reply.  I've owned most of the G series since the G3 and am now using the G15.  It's the best G so far, and except for AF speed, is as good as the G16.

If you use a wrist strap of neck cord instead of the supplied neck strap, the camera fits well is a trouser pocket (not jeans, though).  Front to back depth seems to be the prime determinant of pocketability, and at 1.6" the G15/16 is the same depth as the G7X.

Focal length range is the same as the G11, at 28-140 mm, equivalent; but faster.  My G15 is my go-to camera for programs at the schools involving my grandkids and it does a great job at ISO 800 or even 1600.  The RX100 III (or IV) is a nice camera, but a 75 mm lens isn't nearly long enough for most of the plays and school programs.

Check the comparitors at this site and Imaging Resource, and compare the G15/16 to the RX100's.  The G15 holds up very well at higher ISO.  Well enough that I've had no urge to replace it.

If you do not want to buy the current G16 why do you want to buy this mark of camera when you do not want to buy the camera which currently represents this type of camera.

It seems that if you do not like the G16 you obviously do not like this type of camera so why not buy something else.

So you want a Gxx camera but not the Gxx camera currently available hence it would appear to me you do not like the Gxx camera. It is all a bit mysterious to me.
