Adding a decent lens to the G7
1

This is just a quick few remarks. I have had the G7 for a few months and results with the kit 14-140 P-IS were good (nothing to set the world alight but good) Then the GX8 was announced and I was considering selling the G7 for the GX8 to get IS when using my 25 1.4 summilux. I started to phone around but at that time they were back order so I placed one on back order. In the mean time I started to look through the review sites on the GX8 and the 12-35 f 2.8 lenses. It suddenly dawned on me that I could order a 12-35 whilst waiting for the GX8 to become available and give it a try seeing as it had IS. After around 30Gb of 4k video and many stills I realised that this was a dream lens, nice and compact, well made and pin sharp with dust and to some extent splash proof.

I know the GX8 would have given me extra pixels and some later features but at almost half of the outlay I had what I wanted which was a fastish 24-70 equivalent giving me IS when required with IQ to match my fuji 23 1.4 and 35 1.4 on a AP-C sensor which if you have used those lenses is no mean feat, trust me.

Last time I had a decent zoom of around that focal length (I think it was the early Canon L 24-80 or was it a 28-80?) it was like carrying a bag of sugar around with me let alone the body weight. I`m quite surprised with a bit of walking forward just how that focal range covers most shooting conditions.

So, stick the G7 + 12-35 on a decent light Gitzo Carbon tripod, rest it on your shoulder and you have the means to shoot superb 4k video with stills to match. BTW when shooting video on the pod i turn IS and AF off and try to avoid the temptation to do a lot of panning.

With the difference in cash outlay we now have a go anywhere, lay around the house camera that we can use between us, the LX100 which with double cashback came out at £389 (with 4k btw)

Cheers

Re: G7

I got my 12-35mm for my Gx8 about 3 weeks ago - a very good  lens. No jitters with video and amazing quality with still images. B&H had a $200 off sale and I couldn't resist.

Re: Adding a decent lens to the G7

I see the original post is two months old, but thought I would add this.

I had intended to buy the GX8 but ended up buying the G7 when I learned that with 4k video, the GX8 crops quite a bit more than the G7.  The GX8 review on youtube by The Camera Store showed how much it crops.

With the GX8, shooting with a lens at 24mm (FF equiv) you end up with something more than 30mm, although I don't know the exact number - someone in the forum a while back said 38mm.  The G7 does crop a little (you can see it zoom-in in the viewfinder or LCD when you start recording), but it is a fairly mild zoom.  If you often want to shoot as wide as possible, the G7 was a good choice.  I am very happy with mine.

By the way, you mentioned that you have the 14-140 f3.5-5.6.  When I use this lens with the G7 and shoot 4k video hand-held, with OIS on, there is a major jitter or vibration introduced into the recorded video even when shooting at full wide 14mm. That does not occur with my 12-35 f2.8, even at full zoom.  Have you seen this with your lens and G7?

It is most visible when shooting hand-held and trying to hold the camera steady with no intentional  camera movement such as panning.  There was a recent long thread about this and many owners of the lens have experienced this jitter.  Some owners have not.

Re: Adding a decent lens to the G7

Yeh, I only use the 14-140 if I`m pushed, it is liable to the jitters but that might be me using it at the long end.

I use a tripod, MF and no IS and i get great results from the G7. What I do when I want to pan is to go shutter priority and select 50fps (in the UK) and that stops any jitter when panning. OK, you might have to use a Nd filter at times but well worth it. Out of interest a friend of mine has a non EU G7 that has 60fps as opposed to 50fps and gets superb panning results at most speeds, we are still trying to work out why.

Sports was worse?

A low level DFD can't match GH4.

Just take camera in hand, aim something at 14mm (OIS on) and try to hold camera steady. The result should be quite steady image with little rapid sideways vibration or jittering. The shutter speed is not affecting much. Can you test?
