Re: Lightweight Tripod for EM-1?

As far as I can tell, the Slik Sprint 150 is identical to the Pro II but with a heavier ball head and considerably lower price. I've used the Sprint 150 with an E-M10 and Oly 12-40 f2.8 with no problems.

Sirui T005X

I had this Sirui aluminum http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/917558-REG/sirui_bsrt005xk_t_005x_aluminum_tripod_black.html for long treks but sold it recently

Pluses:

Small, light, can sit low, compact for travel

Includes ballhead and all

Tall enough for me when extended

Minuses:

Flimsy, not stable (needs a weight to hold it down on center column)

Ball head is weak and has no friction control

Tiny Arca plate

5-section legs

I use it mainly for hiking on longer treks, but realize I may need something a bit beefier to counter the wind and all

I ordered the carbon Triopo GT 25 L which has thicker legs but it hasn't yet arrived

Will report back in a few days

Cheers,

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a Tripod to use with my EM-1 (with the 12-40 lens or the 75-300 at this stage) and would like to get some feedback as to which is the best way to go. Lightweight is important to me, plus I don't want to spend too much. I'm considering the following 3 Tripods:

1. The Slik Sprint Pro II

2. The Benro iTrip IT15

3. The Vanguard VEO 204AB

The Slik is the lightest and cheapest, has the greatest maximum height but the lowest load capacity, but surely sufficient for what I need?

The Vanguard and the Benro both seem similar. Both similarly priced, both pack away to a shorter length (less than 400mm which is handy) and both weigh around 300g more then the Slik (not sure how much the 300g would matter to me). Both have double the load capacity but a lower maximum height....

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated including experiences with these particular tripods if you have used any of these.

thanks

Alan

Enjoying my Mephoto Daytripper with the EM1.  Light but feels quite solid.  Collapses small and can be used as a monopod as well.

Re: Lightweight Tripod for EM-1?

I use a Manfrotto Compact Light

it is... well light... 800g or so

it handles E-M1 + 12-40 without problems

it is decently priced

Vanguard Alta 224CT + Manfrotto 494 ballhead

I like this combination for hiking/backpacking at 2.2 pounds. Carbon fibre legs that compress to 16", extends to 36" without center column, 47" with. Stable, but legs can be spread widely for even more stability or to drop the tripod to a lower height. Around $200.

When shooting flowers and on trips where I am not shooting the MW and have rocks to set camera on I sometimes just carry the 8 oz Oben TT-100 mini-tripod, metal, stable for most M4/3 lenses. Stands around 5-1/2" tall, not a good choice for UWA. Around $30.

follow up with Triopo Carbon GT 25L N1

So the Sirui was sold off

Enters the Triopo GT 25L N1 all carbon

Folded height is about 14"

Full extended height is 57"

The leg width is 25mm, quite a bit sturdier and wider than the Sirui

The ball head + plate are also beefier and more precise

The ball head lacks resistance setting but it's normal for this level of ball head

I'm quite pleased with the new set up

Size and weight have not increased much but yet sturdiness is multi fold

It's the perfect travel companion to the EM5II

And like $120 on Amazon? (http://www.amazon.com/Andoer-Triopo-Portable-Monopod-withTriopo/dp/B00NNEKBI6)

Wow. Looks like a great value, at the very least. Looking forward to hearing your reports from the field.

In the field

I've used it in and around the house both outside and inside

It's much more stable than the Sirui, almost as stable as my main tripod the Triopo 1127 + Photo Clam ball head

Under windy conditions, one will still have to hang some weight under the center column for more stability

The ball head is not as smooth as the Photo Clam but the latter's price is twice the price of the tripod alone
