Re: E-M5 Mark II vs E-M1

Design error, assembly error, dodgy group of parts from a supplier...most failures have many fathers.

I'd basically decided to go with this thread's advice and stick with the E-M5 II + purchase the Fotodiox grip. But now the v4.0 firmware news has broken and I'm wondering about the E-M1 again! It looks like, come November, most of the features will be similar. Major differences appear to be:

  • E-M1 will have focus stacking (and still have the built-in grip!)
  • E-M5 II will have somewhat better IBIS, high resolution mode and a few more options for movies

Is that a reasonable summary? Has this changed anybody's opinion about getting one over the other?

Will the E-M5 II have better IBIS after the E=M1 gets the v4 firmware update? I thought they would be the same.

IIUC FW4 will improve M1 video IBIS but not still IBIS, which would leave the 5II with a one-stop edge. Not a big deal except in push-the-envelope handholding situations.

Re: E-M5 Mark II vs E-M1

The agony continues. I had a play with a GX8 today with the 12-35mm and really liked the handling and the crazy fast focus. I also preferred the look of the GX8 to the E-M1, which does look a little bit dated on the back by comparison. I had a feel of the E-M5 II grip and it just didn't feel as solid as the GX8 or the E-M1 with their built in grips. I really need to make a decision about this soon!

Get the E-M1 if you have older Four Thirds lenses you want to use. Another good thing about the E-M1 is the good ergonomy, however, the extra grip for the E-M5 II partially makes up for that.

Other than that, get the E-M5 II.
