The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 30mm
2

Let's see how do Samsung lenses perform when we set the focus appr 20 inch / 50cm away from the sensor. So we shoot pretty close this time and look at two focus points.

A sample image looks like this:

Each picture is taken with this angle of view, at ISO100 F4.5 0.5sec, AWB, halogen lights indoors. Focus is set to YORK and tat is exactly the same distance from the sensor as the hip of the statue.

Body used NX500 on a tripod.

F4.5 at 0.5sec shutter speed and ISO100, AWB, halogen light indoors.

Focus point 1 is YORK, Focus point 2 is the hip area - both the same distance from the sensor. Focus was set to YORK manually with 8x magnification assist for best quaity.

I did not test the 16-50 S 2.0-2.8 lens, but all the others.

Thes above will be the crop areas to evaluate and guess the lens. One on pretty much the side with 9x crop factor, the other within the centre circle at 6.8x magnification.

Looking at the two set of cropped images, can you tell the sequence of the lenses I used to take below pictures?

Lens 1

Lens 2

Lens 3

Lens 4

Lens 5

It is also interesting to see on above hip images how the background bokeh changes as the lens changes. (The magazine text is appr 15cm behind the hip.)

And one more set of images, this time clearly out of the centre circle, on the far side:

Lens 1

Lens 2

Lens 3

Lens 4

Lens 5

It is your turn to guess which Samsung lenses I used.

I will tell you how many answers you got right. (the S lens is not included).

Ok. I will try again and hope to get at least one right. I'll assume OIS is off and e shutter on (I think this really affects the 16-50pz)

The first 3 is hard to guess.

1. 18-55

2. 16-50 pz

3. 20-50 (a bit cooler color from last test)

4. 18-200 (blur)

5. 30mm f2 (sharpest and not so saturated color)

Everybody will agree that

4. 18-200 (blur)

I guess:

1. 30mm (best picture to me, best bokeh)

5. 20-50 (cooler colors, good performance on corner)

2. 16 - 50 PZ

3. 18-55 (worst performance on corner)

They all uses f4.5, so I think the bokeh might be due to small difference in focus. I found it strange that the 20-50 would be the cooler color as that is not how I remember it. But my 30/f2 is less warm/saturated than the zooms, probably camera profile. That said, I might switch 1 and 3 or 2 and 3 ....

Re: The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 30mm

I also can not  really explain the bokeh difference, but it is quite notable.

The object-body sensor distance was quite small (appr 50cm). what differs is the leans. The 30mm is only some 4 cm deep, whereas the 18-200 is at least 15cm. The PZ lens and 18-55 somewhere half way. 20-50 a bit shorter.

The focus was manually set to YORK (when it was in the centre), and then the ballhead was turned around to its final position as you see it on the sample image.

New York and hip is at the same disctance from the sensor, but in the final positon York falls to the far left.

Re: The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 30mm

So my guess would be:

1. Samsung 16-50mm PZ

2. Samsung 20-50mm

3. Samsung 18-55mm

4. Samsung 18-200mm

5. Samsung 30mm

Re: The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 30mm

That was a really wild guess...

Nex try:

1. Samsung 30mm

2. Samsung 18-55mm

3. Samsung 16-50mm PZ

4. Samsung 18-200mm (for sure)

5. Samsung 20-50mm

If this is true, I would be a bit surprised though...

Further tips waited for the other 4.

Wow, 3, must be my lucky day.

One thing is from my experience the 20-50 is pretty sharp at 30mm and not a cool color lens (so I am sure why it has the cool WB in the 45mm test, but I don't have the 20-50mm anymore).

So I will switch my 1 and 3 choice

1. 20-50mm ( I don't think either 16-50pz or 18-55 has that bokeh and good balance of sharpness)

2. 16-50 pz (keep this choice as not as sharp near the edge)

3. 18-55mm

4. 18-200 (blur)

5. 30mm f2 (sharpest and not so saturated color)

Re: The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 30mm

Based on the "one is correct" or "four are incorrect" answers to posts which identified (4) correctly, my initial answer is

1。 not 30, not 1650

2。 not 1650, not 2050, not 1855 --> 30/f2

3。 not 1855 not 1650

4. 18200

5 not 2050 not 30

Based on the "3 are correct" answer, my final answer is

1. 18-55

2. 30/f2

3. 20-50

4. 18-200

5. 16-50

This must be correct, assuming OP's answers are all correct. I actually cannot believe 2 is 30/2; it is not as good as 5 which to my surprise is from a cheap kit lens. Maybe 4.5 is not 30/f2's best aperture.
