I really like my old G9
6

It is a great travel companion.  I was driving through Greenville, SC and spotted this brick wall.  I have always liked the old painted brick wall signs.  Might not be the greatest photo artistic-wise, but I like it.

Straight out of the camera JPG.

Yes the G9 was great in it's day, as was it's "Poor Man's" version, the A650.  Glad to hear yours is still working.  I miss my G11, now sold.

Re: I really like my old G9

The G9 was the first powershot with RAW.
Canon promised lens support in DPP but they didn’t, just like the G10.
That was a major disappointment for me.

Nothing wrong with the camera’s.
Sold the G10 later and I wished I didn’t
CC/ACR can make amazing images from those old stuff.

Re: I really like my old G9

The G3, G5, & G6 had RAW.  They dropped it on the G7 because they said the JPEG engine was so good there was no point in having RAW.  Many disagreed with that, so the G9 and all later G's got RAW.

Re: I really like my old G9

I have had all of the G series since the G5, except the G10 and G16.  I like the G15 a lot; but my favorite of the whole range was the G7 fitted with a Franiec grip.

Both the G7 and G9 suffered from a badly designed optical finder.  The optical finders have been pretty poor; but the G7 and G9 set a new low.  The problem?  The viewfinder and lens's optical axis cross at only 5-6 feet.  All other Canon's with an OVF are set to cross at infinity.  The result of this is that for any subject further that 6', the camera shoots high.  I eventually learned to use the top of the reticle as my aiming point for distant subjects, and to use the LCD for indoor shots.  The similar A series cameras did not have the problem.

G9 and time-lapse

I still have my Canon G9.  It takes great photos in good light, but is sub-par in low light compared to the newer cameras.  What I like best about it is the ability to take time-lapse movies without external software.  I wonder if the newer Canon  S and G cameras can do the same?

Thanks for sharing. I love my G12 still.

The old cameras still have their strenghts and no need to update every year.
