The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 45mm
3

I have testet 5 out of 6 Samsung lenses at 45mm. (I treat the two versions of the 45mm one identical optically when I say 6)

Body used for testing: NX500

Images cropped in body - at 7.8x magnification.

Tripod used, optical image stabilisators set to OFF.

F5.6 and 1/320s in Manual mode.

Focus was set manually - very carefully for best quality with 8x maginifaction assistant.

Let's see how familiar are we with our original Samsung gear performance!

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Can you tell to which Samsung lenses were used to capture below 5 images?

Bonus track: which lens was not tested this time?

I will tell you how many answers you got right...

Image 1 - which lens is it?

Image 2 - which lens is it?

Image 3 - which lens is it?

Image 4 - which lens is it?

Image 5 - which lens is it?

Bonus track: which lens(or lenses) was(were) not tested at 45mm?

(do not be mislead by the exif data mm figure. The original images cover the same view angle, even if 40, 45 or 48mm was recorded by the camera-lens combination)

Very interesting, I can't wait to find out what images 2 and 3 are! My guesses are the same as Piecoro above. My order of preference is 2, 3, 1, 5, 4.

Are these center crops or edge/corner crops?

Have to disagree. To me n.4 Cant be 20-50. My 20-50 has better color than 16-50 and better sharpnes if stopper down like un the test. I think that n.4 may be 18-55. I am from Phone and can evaluate nothing than colors.

Not sure about that although I've never used the 20-50. Image 4 has a cool colour cast that the others doesn't have, and I've only used the 18-55 very briefly but I remember thinking that it looked very warm (perhaps I forgot to change the WB?) which is what I feel when I look at image 5. Now looking more at the distortion I may switch 1 and 5 above but it's a tough call.

The 20-50 is not exactly an expensive lens and I know the 18-200 doesn't have many nice things said about it but the 18-200 was already ruled out, I have to stick with the 20-50 for image 4.

Re: The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 45mm

Yes, one lens is notably colder in tone that also surprised me. I have removed all filters prior to test, so it is the lens that causes the tone shift. ChimPANZER

Place of the crop within the original image
1

zipcode,

Instead of trying to describe it that is it is not center, but still well in the center area, I rather decided to upload the image and show the center of the picture and some circles around with the crop itself, so that you can clearly see where is it coming from.

ChimPANZER

This is the place of the crop used for this testing within the original image.

Re: The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 45mm

BreadedManMatt,

I have a pretty similar order of preference.

To me the most appealing one is lens used for picture 2.

Then comes 3-1 for the second place. I like the native colours 1 far better than any other lens', but 3 seems just a slightly bit sharper, and colours are easy to adjust later. So it is a draw for me.

On the trird place are 4 and 5. Picture 4 is bit sharper and its colours can be adjusted, but 18-200 have much better tones for me. So hard to decide.

Re: The Samsung BIG lens TEST - performance at 45mm

mordor_74,

I agree, screen does matter a lot. An uncalibrated screen with an incorrect lens tone can result in appealing coulours to you. It is said, that people also have different tone tastes and colour detector density, so even if you have a calibrated screen, you may not enjoy the colours on the same screen as an another person.
