Olympus announcements - timing.
2

Yes, I do have little to do this morning (6am here in Oz) so I wasted time by checking the number of Olympus M4/3 bodies announced each year.

  • 2009 - E-P1, E-P2
  • 2010 - E-PL1, E-PL1s
  • 2011 - E-PL2, E-P3, E-PL3, E-PM1
  • 2012 - E-M5, E-PL5, E-PM2
  • 2013 - E-PL6, E-P5, E-M1
  • 2014 - E-M10, E-PL7
  • 2015 - E-M5ii, E-M10ii

And I guess that's it for this year, like to make a prediction? Here's mine.....

  • 2016 - E-PL8, E-M1ii

Be a devil, but be realistic with your predictions. Unrealistic wishes not wanted here.

Oh, and dates from my timeline page at http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/80-Oly-timeline.html

Regards... Guy

PS. I sure had a lot of cameras to untag

Fun stuff. I've been thinking we might see the E-M1 II this year -- making it the year of the IIs.

I could see launching some overdue PEN cameras within the next 3-12 months.   E-PM7 and E-P7 perhaps?

I think a new E-M1 is likely next spring.

I was awake and up at 4:30am

I checked my first email this morning, sent at 4:32am. Now it's 6:30am and my stomach tells me that it's breakfast time.

No, the E-M1ii has to be next year as I heard they have had problems with the cappucino option.

I heard a rumor that the EM-1 Mark II will be equipped with four strap lugs, and a lug shortage has pushed its release into 2016.

Yes, this thread confirms that you were up at 4:30 this morning.

I actually had to look it up to confirm that such a time does indeed exist.

Re: Olympus announcements - timing.

EM1 II is perhaps the most important announcement next year so it has to be at Photokina, ie, September 2016

Others:

E-P7 with new external EVF and guts of EM5 II + EM10 II (Spring 2016)

Surprise camera:

LX100 like fixed zoom camera a la Pen Trip (Summer 2016)

Powerzoom camera with 1" sensor (Summer 2016)

Cheers,

Well it's 1:15AM on Friday here in beautiful Western Massachusetts and instead of sleeping, I up, wide awake, and reading all the forum posts. I think there is no doubt that the E-M1 Mk II is coming and 2016 sounds good to me. As for the EPL-8, I don't think we will see one unless Olympus decides to make it slightly larger, put an EVF in it, and slide in between the GM5 and GX8.

The E-PLx line is very popular in Japan so it will keep going.

In the BCN rankings it (E-PL6/7 currently) adds up to a very popular camera in the interchangeable lens class, second only to top selling Canon Kiss/Rebel in the home market.

In other countries maybe not so popular so E-PLx may indeed end up in Asia only in future.

Like cars without AC, I don't think you'll see many cameras without an EVF in the future other than bargain hunter specials. That is, other than smartphones, which now own the market those formerly populated (i.e., why put up with a 3" screened camera without EVF when your 16MP smartphone has a 5"+ screen?).

I think there's a niche for an E-PL8 provided it has an EVF/built-in flash/IBIS and matched the E-PL7's 4.5 x 2.6 x 1.5″/12.6 oz size. Panny has the GM5 with EVF at 4 x 2.4 x 1.4″/7.4 oz, and GM1 with flash at 3.9 x 2.2 x 1.2"/7.2 oz, so an EVF/built-in flash/IBIS in an E-PL7/a6000 size (latter with built-in flash/EVF) isn't much of a stretch these days.

Panny came close in the GX7 (EVF/built-in flash/IBIS in a 4.8 x 2.8 x 2.1″/14.8 oz body), but inexplicably (to me) went the other way in the truckish GX8. Leaves a nice spot for a "right-sized" full featured E-PL8, so that will assuredly never happen .

The details for those who like such things: http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=panasonic_dmcgx8&products=oly_ep5&products=panasonic_dmcgx7&products=sony_a6000&products=oly_epl7&products=canon_eosm3&products=oly_epl5&products=sony_a5100&products=panasonic_dmcgm5&products=panasonic_dmcgm1&sortDir=ascending

My bet is down for an E-M1 II in time for the 2015 holidays, too many good cameras around for Olympus to dally, plus I like the idea of 2015 as year of the II's.

Here's to the fine sport of armchair camera predictions!

Cant imagine them delaying the em1ii to sept next year...too much competition to sit on their heels. If it isnt this year it has to be early 2016

I agree. You'd be naive to think Olympus is going to release the M1 II this year and take the spotlight away from the EM5 II and EM10 II.

Even today, if you look at whats available, the EM1 still holds it's ground really well. It easily competes and bests some of the newer models. I still consider the EM1 to be the flagship of all m4/3 cameras, even after 2 yrs.
