FA 50mm f1.4 wide open in studio

Trying to get a premium feel to my portrait/studio work.

First one is a selfportrait, and then my son.

Hope you will give a little comment or critiqe...

On you the out of focus ears are quite noticeable to me. No problem with your son though. Not sure if because of b&w on you or ? Maybe a different angle, background, or f2 or 2.8 would help on yours.

I personally like your self portrait more.  The lighting is a more dramatic.  The lighting on your son looks a little flat.

Also, I think that you should stop down so that the entire head is in focus.

Just my 2 cents

A little hard to judge on my smartphone during lunch hpur, but i like both, two different shots.
The b and w has a bit more drama and character whilst your son is a almost vintage, soft shot which fits him nicely.
I have the Sigma 1.4 50mm which is a bit soft wide open but it depends on personal preference.
Depends on the style your developing, but i say a big thumbs up to anyone leatning to do lighting and portrait work because its a whole different ball game than most other photography.
Well done and keep trying, look for more examples of what works and kerp posting.
Regards Rob

I like them both, i wonder though if the camera was just a tiny bit further away or stopped down to F2 that the depth of field would of worked a little better for your black and white?

Hi Sila,

I think your selfie has 2 things that you could enhance:

1: your nose is sharp, your eyes aren't. Focus on the eyes, they are the first and most important part of a face (and a portrait).

2. Your light setup is one softbox to the left, one to the right. This is fine for children, but not for you. I would choose a main light with softbox camera left (1 - 2 o'clock seen from the model) and hard (rim**) light 1/4 of the power of the main light from 7 o'clock 45-60 degrees above.

Your b/w conversion is wonderful, also the bokeh of the lens.

Nice work!

Have a nice day

Albert

Thanks robbo

Yes playing around to get some experience and to find my style and to be a little different....

The 50mm f1.4 is a little soft, but mostly it just needs some contrast, your sigma should be a tad sharper wide open...?

Re: FA 50mm f1.4 wide open in studio

At 1.4 the Siggy is pretty soft, better if the subject is closer and you focus on the eyes, you can get a form of sharpness but the rest of the image is soft and makes it look slightly out of focus.

As soon as you open it up a stop or two, she 'pops' into life ..... here's an example at 1.4

It looks soft but when you pixel peep, the eyes and lips are pretty good. It does have a dreamy look and I really like it on your son.

(also the siggy is one very big piece of glass .........)

Hi Sila,

I just uploaded an example picture. I started to take pictures of the old men in our village. Paul is 80 years old, was a hewer. He moved to my home village at the age of 50+ due to a pneumoconiosis. Hope you like it.

Have a nice day

Albert
