Who is using the Olymppus 75/1.8 as their telephoto?

Have never been much of a telephoto guy so for a tele I've been using the Canon 55-250 on that system (it's passable, just OK) and the Panasonic 45-150 OIS on my m4/3's system.

Yesterday went to a vehicle race and decided to bring the EM-10 and 45-150 instead of the Canon system and it failed miserably!  Did not get a single usable picture from the day - mostly because of the lack of subject separation (I knew this going in, can't expect that from f/5.6, backgrounds were just messier than I figured they'd be at the race site) but also there were more mis-focused shots than you would expect.  Much more.  Forget about focusing (using AF-S, not trying for continuous) on anything moving and many times it wouldn't lock focus and just hunted back and forth before giving a false lock, including stationary vehicles that were staging!  FWIW, I do not have any focus issues with any of my other m4/3 lenses - I'm sure this is just the price to pay for an inexpensive tele.

So my question is who is using the Olympus 75/1.8 as a tele?  I like the 1.8 aperture as it will give fast shutter speeds and as good of subject isolation as is possible.  How fast is the focus for moving subjects?  Is there still talk about another longer telephoto coming out like a 150/4.0 or something if I want to go even longer?  I've thought about the Olympus 40-150 but it's more than I want to spend ($1699.- + 13% tax here in the Great White North, about $1900.- when all is said and done) and I am also NOT liking what I've seen from it's bokeh in some situations.  Alternatively, I could just bite the bullet and use my Canon system for telephoto and get the 70-200IS that is on sale right now for close to the Olympus 75 price.  That would be much more versatile and I really like how responsive that body is but I am phasing out how much I use the Canon system and have been thinking of putting it all up for sale, this would keep me in the system and I'm very 'meh' about having both.  The 1.8 of the Oly would make it useable indoors, where I know the Canon would be limited for moving objects.  Decisions, decisions.

Comments, ideas?  Thanks all!

i have the 75 with the Oly 40-150 (slow one) and Panny 45-200. I don't bother to take the 2 zooms along anymore. The 75 is so sharp you can do a fair amount of cropping and still get better IQ than the zooms.

If I need a longer FL I just resign myself to the fact that I took the wrong camera outfit with me. I have Canon FF and APSC and the tele zoom options are just much better. I do have the 55-250 IS STM and find it to be a great lens. I'm not sure which version you have, but I use mine even more than my 70-200L zoom. Maybe you want to try the STM version or another copy of that lens because it is the best bargain tele I have ever seen. Way better than any of the m43 consumer zooms

I use it a lot for indoor sport.

For outdoors I'd usually use the 75-300.

gorgeous lens but a 1-trick pony

primes are good at the shorter end when you can crop down.. much more difficult at the tele end and 150mm eFOV is a very specific FL that is restrictive in terms of compositional opportunities

i like the lens per se but the 40-150/2.8 is overwhelmingly more useful ... way more reach - but more importantly with the ability to dial it back to 40mm if needed

i also had the 70-300 which gives good reach for size and weight but not great for things like sports due to the slow apertures...which is critical at longer FL for stability

I have the 40-150 and the 75 as well.

isolation: The subject isolation depends on the aperture as well as the focal length.

Therefore the 40-150 CAN beat the 75/1.8 if the subject (and the background) is far away.

For the same relative subject size (zoomong by feet) the 150/2.8 is similar to a 75/1.4 :

http://howmuchblur.com/#compare-2x-150mm-f2.8-and-2x-75mm-f1.8-on-a-0.9m-wide-subject

Auto focus: AF is very very food with both lenses.

Bokeh: While the 75/1.8 has a very good bokeh, the 40-150 is not bad either. Only if the background is near (like the gras behind a racing car) the bokeh can be a little bit busy. But don't be fooled by some reviews mocking about the bokeh: the size and the quality of the bokeh is better than with most mFT tele lenses and even better than the 50-200 I owned. Some primes (and as I have read, some Canon tele zooms) are smoother, that's it.

Re: Who is using the Olymppus 75/1.8 as their telephoto?

The bokeh on the 75mm is better (smoother and creamier) than that of the 40-150mm 2.8

It's perhaps a tad sharper too

But by no way it can replace the 40-150mm which is much more versatile and useful

I use the 75mm for streets and portraits but I can use the 40-150mm for many other events, especially wildlife and sports

Yea, if money is tight you get try to use the 75mm for many situations but it'll be a bit on the short end of tele

To me the 40-150mm 2.8 is the most important lens after the 12-40mm 2.8 (if not more)

Cheers,

Re: Who is using the Olymppus 75/1.8 as their telephoto?

I do. It's basically my default lens on my em5II. I've long lusted after the old, 4:3, 150mm f2, but adopted the 75mm as a compromize and more versatile lens. You can crop later or use the digital teleconverter (jpegs only, raws are uncropped). Very good subject isolation, almost full frame like and that speed is useful in less than ideal light.

My only beef is that the AF is not quite as reliable as other m43 lenses. It's generally fast but it tends to hunt more. Not so good with fast moving subjects. Maybe the latter can be remedied on the EM1, but I get feeling it wouldn't AF as well as the 40-150 f2.8 PRO.
