The Panasonic Lumix S5II launched the second generation of Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless camera system and was the first Panasonic to feature phase detect autofocus. As our review reveals, it’s a heck of an all-around camera for both still and video shooters.
A7Rii not recognizing Canon Lenses with Metabones but a5000 does?
I am having trouble getting my Metabones Mark IV adapter to work the the a7Rii. When mounted on a a5000 body it works fine, the camera sees the lens and the electronics in the lens are functional. But when put on a A7rii or FS700, the camera does not recognize the lens, Manual Focus is indicated and the aperture cannot be adjusted.
The Metabones adapter I am trying to use is "Canon EF to Emount Mark IV" Model: MB_EF-E-BM4
The Metabones adapter does have the latest firmware. These are the lenses I have tried so far that function fine on the a5000 (with sloooow autofocus, but do function), but are not recognized by the a7rii or FS700 bodies:
-EF 35mm f/1.4L
-EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L
The cameras both autofocus fine with FE lenses and also with A-mount lenses with the E-A mount adapter.
Could there be a camera setting I am missing somewhere? I appreciate any advice!
or the a7r2 only shows "F--"? If the latter check the contacts between the MB IV and camera (most probable), and from adapter to lenses (less probable, as the same combos works on the Nex),

I spent some time comparing a Metabones 4 vs the Viltrox adapter on an A7RII and found that the Metabones was more buggy without providing any benefit in performance. At one point the Metabones just completely stopped auto-focusing my Sigma 50 Art lens. The current firmware for the Metabones was released before the A7RII was available and wasn't tested with the camera so Im going to stick with a cheap adapter until the Metabones is updated.
Nope, I wasn't getting any iris value at all. I took it on and off the FS700 and A7RII numerous times with no change in how it acted. After reading your reply I focused more on the contacts, I tapped on it and tried to move it back and forth a bit and suddenly the iris value displayed. So that was the issue.
It looks like the metabones adapter I have must have its tolerances slightly off. Works fine on the plastic mount body but on the metal mounts things don't line up quite right.
Thanks for the reply, was helpful to know that I wasn't missing anything and to just pay attention to the contacts.

Thanks for the response! Yes, it seems to be either buggy or the contacts not quite lining up correctly on the cameras with metal mounts. I will have to see how it works out, might just have to replace the Canon glass with native Sony lenses if its not going to be reliable.
I emailed Metabones Support Team and they told me they were testing the A7RII, new firmware will come soon. See if you can wait for it.
You indicated that you were using latest Metabones firmware version ... what version number are you using?

until "now" ALL previous E-mount cams were allowing the LA-EA1/EA3... adapters to communicate with and utilize for the driving the PDAF-optimized lenses ONLY the CDAF info from the respective sensors.
The MB smart adapters "pretend" to the E-mount cams to be just that: an EA1/EA3.
But now the a7r2 FW & HW have opened up a new way, as the OSPDAF is for the I-st time quick enough to cope [parhaps, as it needs to be carefully checked out] with fast, dynamic action scenes.
Thus, MB have their job cut for finding out how exactly translate OSPDAF info for optimized EF-mount lenses commands?
Perhaps MB ver-V will be already good enough, or... maybe it might be prudent to wait till MB-VI FW. ver. 101 ?
What worries me pretty much still is... that with the A-mount lenses the EA-1/EA-3 seem to perform worse than rather dated PDAF (the AF'ing SLT module there is about five years old, taken almost directly from the A56/A65 models) of the EA2/EA4

I'm using version .41...I downloaded their utility and it told me I already had the latest version. I found if I really torque the lens on tight that it comes alive and starts working. However I missed several shots earlier today due to it suddenly losing connection with the camera. I think I received a defective adapter and am going to return it.
Hope this Brian's link will helps:

I don't have 35L anymore but my others L's lenses seem work fine with commlite adapter on both my A7R I&II.

...the results there are valid for E-mount cams PRIOR to the a7r2 - there are pretty many obs. now indicating rather serious differences in behavior of AF'ing in the latest incarnation of the OSPDAF from Sony,

Mmmh, I have the same problem with the smartadapter. At the beginning, he works fine, after some lens change, the MB don't work no serious. Sometimes works, sometimes not. Not for professional use recommend. Now, after one week, he always start in the wrong mode (Manual):(
I had the same issue when I first put the adapter on the camera.
I have discovered that the contacts do not align properly on the camera body and the adapter if you lock the adapter in place. I discovered that I'd u release the lock and twist it back ever so slightly it works and the camera recognises the lens. I am in contact with Metabones right now about the issue. I do think k that there might be a slight difference in the contact position between the A7RII and previous A7's. According to Metabones the A7RII is not fully supported yet.

Very interesting to hear the A7RII is not fully supported yet> Thank you for the response, that is exactly the issue I was experiencing. I returned the Metabones adapter and am going to wait a bit for a solution. If you think of it, please reply with an update if you hear anything further back from Metabones about a solution. Thanks again!
I will definitely keep u updated. I am still waiting to hear back from Metabones directly of my findings. This weekend I might return to the store and get an exchange for a new adapter, test it there to see if it was just that particular one.
Other videos of people on YouTube adding an adapter and Canon. Lens to their Sony all works just fine, and theirs all clicked into proper place. Hope I just have lemon
Metabones contacted me back today, told me to exchange my adapter for a new one. They told me their team is still working on firmware for the A7RII.
I do think personally this is a hardware fault however.
I hope they test this out! Fingers crossed on a new adapter.

Yes, sounds exactly like the hardware issue I had. Hope the new adapter works out! Thanks!
This is in line with my findings - and I am now convinced that there is a physical placement difference of the electronic contacts on the A7RII vs the other A&'s, thus people having issues with the adapter not registering all together - try loosening the adapter a micrometer and see if the camera registers the lens.

Grateful for this thread. I just received my mb iv and new A7R2. I'm having the exact same issue. Before I found this thread, I thought it was a firmware issue (updated mb to 0.48, and A7R2 to v3.0). No luck. Read this thread and tried some of the physical adjustment suggestions. Nothing I tried helped and I'm not willing to force anything and risk damage to the camera. Returning it and will see if a different unit works.
Update: Having read about so many problems with the MB iv (including local camera store that stopped carrying them because of so many returns), I decided to try the Fotodiox adapter instead. One quarter the cost of the MB and worked right out of the box -- lens recognized by camera, autofocus worked.

Yup, am having same issues. Was contacted by my supplier that the Metabones MK4 is NOT suited for the A7R2 and is shipping me "Sigma MC-11", afterwards I'll be sending back the MB MK4 for a refund.
(Brand new A7R2 and MB MK4)
btw... the Sigma is like $200 cheaper (Can)
