Manual on page 42 says that you can use Auto-Hi for Tav

and since Auto-Hi can limit upper ISO value is it possible

to have camera work only to a certain ISO and not higher ???

Apparently you can't with the GR, and therefore probably not with the vII either.

With the II at least the ISO will follow you all way up to the upper limit set by your Hi-Auto, if you choke the available light too much by your shutter/aperture you will finally end up with under-exposured images.

great; that's what many of us wanted implemented

GR with Tav going up to 25600 ISO was too crazy to use; one of my popular photos is ISO 6400 only because I forgot I was using Tav; now life will be a little bit easier

I don't mind under exposed photo as I push it in post process or use this mode only in specific conditions; I can think of scenario when high ISO won't be needed if I need to work on F8 and up

Has anyone actually tried this on the GR II? The regular GR just kept bumping up the ISO. I just did a quick test on my II with max ISO set to 3200, it bumped it to 8000.

Read above ! Arnelie did.

It is new feature in GR II, forget about it in GR.

I just did a retest, and I can confirm that my II in Tav mode stops at high-limit ISO set in Auto-Hi mode. If I however select normal ISO Auto, then the ISO follow you way up to 25600.

once again thanks for checking;

I haven't noticed any info about that feature in official release or online test but this is something many GR users were expecting with firmware upgrade and had to cheat with DR settings etc. but it only applied to single shot mode

Outstanding! I was in regular Auto ISO. This feature, along with the high number of raw shots I can take in burst mode is worth the upgrade. Hopefully, they will issue a firmware update for the loyal GR owners. This is THE camera for street shooters, it is truly amazing how little attention people pay to you when using it.

the point of *ANY* auto mode is that, it enables you to get properly exposed images: be it, shutter priority, aperture priority or program...no one needs camera's help to end up with overexposed or underexposed images :)

i can see the problem with the old version of the tav mode, ending up with ridiciculously high ISO shots. The way to prevent that is for ricoh to come up with a better implementation of the auto ISO function, and that's not putting a stupid cap on ISO that will make you end up with under exposed images. You should be able to set it up so that that when it reaches the ISO limit that you have established thr camera adjusts the shutter or priority (per your preference) so that you don't end up with wrongly exposed shots. Check out Nikon auto ISO, if you want to see a better implementation of the so called tav function.

This whole tav thing is a big farce. As much as I love Ricoh user interface their mode dial is a total failure. A shutter priority mode that hides the aperture from the user, an aperture priority mode test hides the shutter speed and a primitive auto ISO function under the disguise of tav mode...i raise my case.

Hm, at least the II gives you the shutter speed in Av mode after pressing shutter halfway, and vice versa in Tv mode. Tav mode is regarded more "expert" mode in that both aperture and shutter is fixed, and the user should have some knowledge in knowing ambient light conditions variability to have them set properly adequate so that your ISO can adjust correspondingly. If shooting raw you can always compensate some underexposure in post.

yes, same with GR make 1...but "halfway press" is too late...i don't understand why ricoh does that. but i have given up guessing.

as of Tav: it is simply auto iso. it could be incorporated with any other AUTO mode (shutter, aperture priority- or program mode...no point in having it as a dedicated mode, really...

and unfortunately not the best auto iso out there, as explained in my previous post. and tons of other posts here and elsewhere.

but, still no other camera gives you the one hand user interface as well as ricoh does. it is perfect in that regard. but few strange and quirky things going on with the operation of that camera.

Well, investigating the II a little further actually reveals that Ricoh has made a remedy for this situation, both for Av, Tv, and TAv mode (I have no info on GR I on this). The setting is default set to Off. For Av and Tv mode, the user can select On, which means that the f-stop or shutter setting, respectively, will be altered automatically by camera to fit the selected EV wanted (if needed do to too much or too little ambient light). In TAv mode, the user can select either that f-number or shutter shall be adjusted. This is explained on page 44 of the (English) user manual.

ok...i see...this is interesting. if that's the case you shouldn't be gettng wrongly exposed shots when the ISO limit is reached?

As I said, these were default set to Off. As when I did the tests some days ago. Now, having discovered and set these functions to On, I get correct exposure! :)

I appreciate this information. this is good news. It will make me hate Tav mode less than I do now :)

TAV rocks with snap focus.

yes, that's what i end up doing for street as well...but there is hardly any magic to it: it is auto ISO...which wasn't the best one out there...and am glad that it is better now. this is indeed good news. snap is great of course!

Just downloaded the GR I user manual, look at page 42, it seems to have the same capability as the GR II in this regard.
