70-300 L lens on 60d question

So I'm new here, thanks in advance for any help.

A few weeks ago I tried out the tamron 70 300 vc and was left a little unimpressed. Anything shorter than 200mm was quite decent but going longer definitely degraded sharpness, contrast and increased CA and purple fringing.

I treated myself to my first L lens, the 70 300 L and it was defintely a major step up at 300mm from the weaknesses seen in the tamron.

That being said, I want to make sure this lens is performing as it should.

First, being as I'm shooting on a 60D, this comparison is a bit concerning. 60d vs Fullframe The 60d sample is obviously much weaker than the 1ds. I know some believe this site to be fallible but whats going on here?

Second, I purchased a kenko 1.4 dgx extender to see how much detail I could extract out of this puppy. Handheld at F8-11, shutter anywhere from 1/250-1/000 I could observe maybe the barest increase in detail with the extender at the cost of some haziness and some smear. IS ON, no filters. I'm wondering my lens copy is not quite delivering the level of sharpness others are getting. (seeing as other users are getting good results out of the pro kenko TC)

I know I m guilty of pixel peeping here and I'm not proud of it. Composition and creativity are way quicker avenues to taking satisfying images. Just want to to get any feedback on these minor concerns. I'm gonna be on a lake in Canada in week and I want those loons to be sharp!!

here are a couple fun images taken
