Fungus cleaning/repair help

I recently received a hand me down 17-40mm from my uncle; and I was really happy because it's an L lens and a gift for me.

Sad to say though, when I checked the lens, there seems to be fungus on the inside of the lens and just recently noticed a growing one (it's the size of a dust speck right now) behind the front element and crystallization around as well.

I want to ask if it is repairable and how much would it cost? As much as I want to ship the lens for a free estimate, I want to ask around first so at least it would give me an idea.

Thank you for everyone who will give guidance!!

Re: Fungus cleaning/repair help

At this point, since the lens hasn't cost you anything (?) and the fungus does not appear to be severe, I would consider repairing the lens, but I'd contact Canon first. Although I'm a Nikon user, Canon USA has excellent product support, arguably better than Nikon and you may find the cost of repair more reasonable than expected. I would guess that Canon would prefer to replace any elements or groups effected by fungus and after cleaning and adjusting you might well end up with a lens that is a better performer than before. Aloha.

Fungus generally eats away coating [ s ] and spreads . Do it quick - send in , right now it will just cost postage to get an estimate . If lens was given to you , by owner , use there name shipping it in .

As owner , you might get a better deal - like it is going to cost more to repair than a reconditioned one would be and we will allow you XX as a trade in .

I'm curious to know what the cost of repair would be for that lens. You can pick them up used in the $500 range.

When storing it, keep the relative humidity between 35-45. I keep one of these in each bag along with enough Silica Gel.
