Re: Update on E-P5 focusing issue

Are you able to transcribe or post a copy of the service report?

Re: Service report

There are two relevant sections. The first is "Explanation of Repairs". For both services this was the same:

"AUTO FOCUS TEST, CHECK, RECALIBRATION AND REALIGNMENT FIRMWARE DOWNLOAD: CORRECTIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS; ADDRESS VALUES MEASURE AND ADJUSTED COMPLETE CLEANING (INTERNAL-EXTERNAL)"

The second relevant section is headed "Description of Parts Used" and in the first servicing this section was empty. In the second servicing the section contained:

"MT CONTACT FRAME UNIT"

So, it looks like something was replaced in the camera which has focused flawlessly upon its return from the second servicing.

Thank you for that.

Just to balance the discussion a bit:

I've been using my E-P5 (two different bodies) for 18 months. I have nothing but praise for AF performance. I use a mixture of Olympus and Panasonic lenses. I also use a mixture of camera modes and settings all the time. So, I guess I can't help you here.

Now, if you want to discuss failing E-P5 dials, I'm your man.

Same for me, never missed a shot so far.

And mine have no problem even with dials. Lucky me.

I've been lucky too. No issues at all in 18 months.

I suspect all those people have faded away from the forum in the last 4 years.....

With the E-P5 you can choose to use a small single centre focus box and do the half press focus, hold and re-frame, then full press to shoot. It's the way that I've used all cameras.

As for finding the single AF box, press Left, then Info and then Up/Down (or the rear dial) changes the focus box setup, and Left/Right (or the front dial) changes the face detection setup.

Otherwise use touch screen AF (optional touch AF and shoot) and set the focus box to the smallest size. Enable touch AF then use the slider on the right side of the screen to set the box size.

The two focus schemes are separate, can have the usual default shutter button AF scheme as anything and keep the small AF box for the touch screen use.

On all cameras I have found that using the single small centre box is the most reliable way to AF. Despite that, again all cameras may do some totally unexpected and stupid AF about 1 in 1,000 shots. If it happens a lot more often than that the try other lenses and other AF schemes and maybe even getting it fixed.

I forgot to add, the E-P5 (and most other non-SLR cameras) expects to find vertical contrast edge in the focus box to achieve AF.

In reality it doesn't need to be a vertical edge, basically just a non-horizontal edge, it gets more critical as the light gets lower.

If only a horizontal edge is available in the scene then twist the camera a few degrees and then the AF will work, hold half press and realign the frame and full press to shoot.

Regards.... Guy

Pen E-P5 + Pen FT prime(s)

I started my photography hobby in the late 1960's with an Olympus Pen-FT and have stuck with Olympus every since. I really appreciate the retro styling of the E-P5 and it's strong resemblance to the Pen-FT.

My everyday-carry setup is all-Olympus: E-P5, VF-3 viewfinder, two pancake primes (9mm and 17mm), and an adapted Pen FT 38/1.8 lens made in 1972, all carried in a 5x5-inch belt pouch. The 45/1.8 would have been too big.

Re: E-P5 focusing issue

When both my EM10s gave me grave shutter problems I stopped using them (obviously) and fell back on using the trusted E-PL3 and E-PL5.

But I wanted progress, so acquired two second-hand E-P5s, which are fabulous.

If they give me problems, I'll still have the oldies to fall back on during repairs.

I'll see if I can get the OM10s repaired. If it's affordable, then it's fine and I'll sell them.
If not, goodbye.

Bottom line: I'm glad I didn't sell the oldies. They're fine cameras, just quite a bit more limited.
