Anyone use the 18-55 on the Xa1?

What might I gain by using an 18-55 on my Xa1 over the 16-50? My kit lens seems to be very sharp, so it would have to be something besides that. Would the additional switches even work on a Xa1?

Well, I tried twice to put some text into my post but DP doesn't seem to want me to, so I'll try it here...

I have wondered what might be the advantages of using a 18-55 lens on my Xa1. My 16-50 is very sharp so I'm not looking for better image quality.  Do the extra features (buttons) work if hooked up to a Xa1?  Anyone tried it?

Yes - I bought one in the hope it would improve the X-A1's focusing speed in low light/low contrast situations.

It didn't seem to - well not enough to please me any way. I found the X-A1's focusing very frustrating at times.

So I bought an XT-10 (great focusing speed in comparison) and put the 18-55 on that with beautiful results.

Now I'm left wondering what to do with the X-A1 (with kit lens) which has great IQ and minimal noise at high ISO.

Both are just "walk around" cameras for me.

In your first attempt, you put your text within the signature instead of in the message body. Click "show signature" on your first post.

Yes, the aperture ring and switches will work on the X-A1. The primary advantage of the 18-55 is the faster (larger) aperture.

Ah! Thanks Randy. I knew I clicked/pushed a button somewhere. Old man moment, I guess.

It's good to know that the aperature ring and switches will work. I've concidered getting one, even thou I don't think it will impove the image quality as my 16-50 is scary sharp to me, but I've been looking at some used Ex1 bodies. I just need to find a realllly good deal on either of them. One of those deals where you feel you should take back things you never stole.

Knowing that it would work on my Xa1 will help if I should find the lens first.

I had both 16-50 and 18-55 on X-A1 for awhile. The 16-50 is not slouch, at some settings it's better than 18-55, but overall those lenses are very close in image quality. You get 1 stop advantage, aperture ring, and better build with 18-55. You will lose 2 mm(11%) at the wide end, but I didn't like the distortions at 16mm anyway. You'll gain 5 mm (10%) at the long end, not a big deal either.

I have both and I can not see a lot of difference in IQ. For me, the 16-50 is ideal for the XM/XA1 it is not as heavy as the 18-55 and the extra wide angle is often useful and ideal for travel. I find the 18-55 is perfect for the X-T10. XM-1 with 27mm is my" take anywhere" pocket camera.
