A case, not a bag

I have a couple of camera bags for my m4/3 gear, but nothing that holds the entire kit. I wanted a case that would lay out the entire thing for working out of a vehicle, for in-studio shooting, and for storage. An important goal was to allow me to store the gear in any configuration of lenses.

I had an unused wooden briefcase, 11.25 x 17 inches (28.5 x 43 cm). I made wooden and aluminum dividers and faced them with 1/8" (3mm) closed-cell foam. Here is the result. It holds two Panny GX7s (with room for bigger cameras in the future), Panasonic 14-42 II, 45-150, and 100-300 lenses, as well as a 45mm f/1.8 Olympus and a 7.5mm Rokinon. The left front corner holds a Nissin i40 and the right front holds a remote release, PC flash adapter, spare batteries & cards, etc. A carry a set of Kenko extension tubes at the bottom of one of the lens cells. I use beanbags a lot, and each camera sits on its own high-visibility beanbag.

Short-lens version with the movable dividers toward the back

Long-lens version with the left divider stowed in the center compartment and the right divider moved forward. One lens goes in the big Neoprene lens bag.

Dividers can be moved around depending on the lenses in use.

Building was easy with a radial-arm saw and mostly used materials I already own. The case gives immediate access to all equipment and keeps it safe from bumps and scrapes. If I need less gear, I can load up one of my bags and leave the unused stuff in the case.

I have a couple of those kinds of case for automobile travel.  My cases have closed foam inserts which  are cut for the individual lenses in one and lighting and filters in the other.  It makes finding specific equipment a lot easier.

Re: A case, not a bag

I've been using a wooden, aluminium clad case since the 1970s. I've refitted the interior using foam a couple of times to suit different kit over the years. I might look at re-doing with dividers having seen the example.

It's great for the car and solid protection. You can buy them new these days for a lot less than a good bag. No so good for shooting on the hoof though.

Very nice idea. It also seems like a good option for long term storage. I'd just add a moisture control device, and you can leave your gear there unattended. I usually carry my gear with me all the time, but I do have some long lenses, which are too big and heavy for everyday carry, but I keep them on a dry box at home. But with your idea, instead of a simple plastic box, it could be a briefcase to bring to a photoshoot, as you mention.

Aluminium Case?

Why not consider those aluminium case that comes with foam pad for tailor made cut to the shape, and are also comes with dividers for free posing as yours.

The pros are: 1) moist proof; 2) good protection; 3) economy. The cons is: relatively heavier than normal camera bag and not convenience to change lens.
