XF 90mm f/2 Sample Gallery -- What do you want to see?
4

Hey Fuji!

I started working on the XF 90mm sample gallery last week, and still need to fill in a few gaps. So far, it's a peach.

What images do YOU want to see from us? I've got quite a bit around minimum focus distance, and street portraits at 2-5.6 (shooting a complete progression today). A flare example is there, and some narrow-aperture shots focused at infinity. What can we give you to help you out (although what I have so far definitely demonstrates how wonderfully sharp this thing is).

Can't wait to hear from everyone.

Everything. Go on. I've kept GAS at bay for over a year and now this lens is nibbling at my edges - the price it right too. Go on. Tip me over the cliff.

Landscape, nightscapes (city), sports, low light/concert/stage.

Wide open and also stopped down for sunstars.

It seems one could use it for street photography of the other side of the street, which could have advantages for the less bold photographers?

Re: XF 90mm f/2 Sample Gallery -- What do you want to see?

Better than the 56, but still held back by Fuji's system itself. I'm purely speculating here, but if a full PDAF system was behind this lens, I expect it would be one of the faster focusing lenses in this 135mm range.

I initially started out with face+eye detection on, and ended up switching it off because it wasn't grabbing the right face, and wasn't gaining me anything over AF-S + recomposing, or moving my focus point to the eye and using AF-C.

Nightscapes? Will do. Sunstars, check. Low light/concert... maybe. Our lens sample guidelines restrict us to base, or occasionally 1 stop over, to get the lens at its sharpest. Concert light, even at f/2, will still be too low to get this below the handheld sharpness threshold of roughly 1/200. A tripod just means that any movements from the band (which a good one will never stay still and keep the energy UP!) will impact sharpness. I'll see if Dan is doing any shows soon so he can at least get the shot, because I do think this FL+brightness+af speed is definitely of interest to concert photographers.

You could just set the camera to 1/200 sec and let the camera pick the ISO. Then fire a burst of shots and usually there should be something very sharp among it. If you would only use the camera JPEGs or even RFC2/Silkypix one would hardly see much difference anyway, also with the noise reduction at high ISO which cannot be turned off, better try RawTherapee for critical sharpness.

Spotlights can be quite bright. I once used a Tamron 90mm at f/2.8, ISO 1600 1/100 sec on a EOS 5D.

I would like to see a portrait in Natural light and one with flash.

These are the settings I always use for JPEG that work well and will not give the plastic skin look.

Set the aperture so it makes sense, it does not have to be F 2.0. For bracketing purposes sure F2.0, 2.8, and 4.0 should be plenty for a portrait.

Manually set Dynamic Range to 100%

Manually set ISO to what makes sense, most times it is ISO 640 or less for me

Select the center autofocus point and do not use Area AF

Use Asia or Provia film simulation, Astia is better here.

Use High Performance mode

Make the focus box big but keep it centered.

Thats about it as my request

Not the usual beer bottles, wines glasses, greasy burgers and sign post shots that have become dpreview trademark. Just be inventive and offer the lens a chance to perform what it was designed for......Please don't take shots to compare it against Sony's counterpart.

Re: XF 90mm f/2 Sample Gallery -- What do you want to see?

First of all, it's a portrait lens. So different types of portraits in different light are in order.

Secondly, it's a short distance sports lens. So some kind of sport action is desirable.

Those are two major uses for this lens. It's not a general purpose lens. People might shoot other random stuff with it, but they don't buy it for that purpose (some may do ... some always do).

Sam - if only you could mail me the lens, I could shoot some studio and natural light fashion and glamour sets for you - it would be a perfect test.

Demonstration of the, relative for this kind of lens, close focusing ability to show what can be achieved in both portrait and general situations.  Both wide open and stopping down a bit. Having used a Canon 135L I am pleasantly surprised with the creative opportunities this feature gives us.

I agree it's a great lens.

Get 1-2 landscape shots at F5.6

That or shoot a tree- make the street stand out at F2.0.

Compressed landscape shots with telephoto lenses are interested.
