Will you upgrade from GX7 to a GX8?

The new GX8 has great features but also larger body.  Wondering if you would upgrade from a GX7 to the GX8 (I'm not).

  • Too expensive
  • I prefer the smaller size GX7 for my uses (only with primes)
  • I prefer the tilt screen of the GX7 for my uses
  • No built-in flash (I use a built-in flash quite often)
  • It has nothing new that attracts me enough to shell out that much money

Nope, just way too expensive. Like this - they will lose a market.

After the price drops, maybe

I'd say for me it largely depends on the improvements in DR and high-ISO performance of the new sensor rather than the size. I might even prefer the bigger size with my larger hands and I like the updated controls. 20mp is not that important and to even start thinking about 4k video I'd need to invest into upgrading my computer and storage.

On the other hand, I've already collected several Olympus lenses (25, 9-18), and will probably get more (17,45). At almost all FLs, the Olympus lens offerings are more attractive in the quality/price range that I can afford. Considering the focus of Panasonic on the OIS and dual-IS, GX8 might not be the best body for me to upgrade in the long run with a bag of non-stabilized Olympus lenses. So it will probably depend where this hobby journey will bring me in the next year while the GX8 price drops.

Re: After the price drops, maybe

Panasonic claims this sensor is above Fuji's X-Trans in performance, both for DR and SNR. This camera seems like a winner to me. Well, except the silver model looks pretty silly...

I must have missed that statement. The GX8 looks indeed attractive on paper and I'm looking forward to see its full reviews showing what this new sensor is capable of.

Yes, I had my eyebrow raised at first but the GX8 is slowly growing on me. I've come to value haptics a good deal and previewers claim the improvement in build quality has been massive, and that this feels like a premium camera to the point the GX7 seems like a toy next to it. It may just be worth the increase in size...

The size again exceeding my expectation on a M43 camera, like GH4...

Yes but when the price has dropped.  I like just about everything about it.    No built in flash is a bit of a nuisance for me so I will have to be able to buy an equivalent very small add on.

Same here. I will (might) buy it when it is the same price range as I bought my GX7 for, €400. So will be another 1.5 at least years I guess.

Yes, but not straight away. Probably next year. Some nice improvements for what I want to do with my cam. I think I would get it when it starts to dip below 1000 I would bite.

Too large, too expensive, no flash, no tilting screen. Looking forward to the new OMD-M10 mk2

It might be shipped with the same flash as the GM5.

I can't upgrade to a GX8

…since I have not yet owned any Panny camera. may I purchase a GX8 anyway, and it is this relevant to your poll?

is that included in the overall price or does it need to be bought separately

No I will not "upgrade" to the GX8 as I keep my old cameras

But I will buy an GX8 when the price has fallen to complement my GX7's

Not for me. Too big, and I was thinking that the new Image Stabilization would be great, but now I find out it won't work with Panny's own 100-300 (where it is most needed) and no upgrade planned for the 100-300. Looks like Panasonic wants us to buy the new 100-400 L at what will most likely be $1,500+. Getting close to $3,000 for the pair.

Keeping my order in for the Oly M5II at $899. Smaller, lighter, 5 axis IS regardless of lens, and better looking IMO. I have my GX7 up for sale, but may have to rethink keeping it as it might become more valuable, I think.
