Repair or Replace Lens for Err 01

Hi!

I am a strictly amateur photographer with delusions of grander things.

I have a Canon 60D and while on vacation, my 5 year old Canon EF-S 17-85mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM literally died. I got the Err 01 error. After trouble shooting, it appears to be the aperture flex cable is the issue. I am having trouble finding a local repair shop in the Houston, TX area. I found a shop that will fix it for $95 plus shipping.

Digging around my camera box, I found the standard Canon EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM (original not USM II).

So, for the amateur (I have the Canon EF50 f/1.8 and Sigma 70-300 1:4-5.6), is it worth repairing the lens?  Or is there a another option, Canon / Sigma / Tamron that would slot in the middle for everyday photography, kids, vacation, etc.

Thanks in advance!
