Re: Silly....

It's still a plenty good camera, and a nice way to start cheaply or if you're unsure about this hobby, particularly with used lenses or the cheap and cheerful 24mm 2.8, 40mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8. My even older 30D is still going strong.

D30 is older, 30D is newer.

Congrats!  Great way to get started, and for almost nothing!

With all the tech talk that goes on around here, sometimes we can tend to forget exactly what a camera is used for!  Some samples from the old 350D, illustrating its potential...

Enjoy your new camera. I purchased a few Olympus DSLR cameras on Ebay over 4 years ago. They were excellent; all cost me less than $200 (USD) each. A while back I found an old Olympus Camedia camera (4 megapixel) for $5 in a recycle center with a 128mb Smart Media card. All I had to do was buy some rechargeable batteries and it worked great. It's fun playing around with some of this old technology. I haven't bought any used Canon gear yet; the three Rebels I bought new in a three year period keep me plenty busy.

Have fun with your new toy.

Congratulations on picking up a great classic camera! Don't let others get you down talking about the latest bells and whistles. I shot with a 350D/Rebel XT for many years, and it served me well.

Enjoy!

My post was factual. And yes, I have used the 350D for a number of years as well. It has pretty inaccurate focus (some lenses better than others). And its user interface is horrid by today's standards. Things really have moved along. It was a great camera in 2005, now not so much anymore.

Image I made with a 350D and Ef 70-200mm f4 L USM.

Re: Great Camera

Congratulation on your purchase of a "Classic".  It is a very robust little camera and very powerful, even if it is missing a few "modern" features.  Mine is still going strong, even though it does not get used as much as it used to. Some of my best photos were taken using my 350D, including some very large prints that adorn my walls.  You managed a great value with your purchase.

Have fun!

While there is no denying that newer cameras generally speaking are better in many ways than older models, that doesn't suddenly make the older model bad.

It doesn't help anybody to tell them how much better they coulda/shoulda done if you were the person spending their money. Let them feel some joy with their purchase, and appreciate all of the great things that it CAN do rather than pounding into them with what it can't.

Å great camera, enjoy!
And, as a first camera, a perfect companion. I use a basic dslr too, and the more I learn, the more I realize thst the camera is very very capable. The shortcomings can easily be dealt with with proper technique.
Have fun and enjoy!!

What's wrong with the 350D? Served me well.

I only upgraded to a 70D recently more for the video function.

In its time it was quite a good camera. That was 10 years ago. That was my point: writing in 2015 that it is a great camera (it isn't anymore) and a camera to start with now, is just not true.

What's wrong with it? it had an AF system that was quite inaccurate with a number of lenses, giving Canon a bad reputation back then on the internet forums. It has a useless back LCD. it has a grip that many kept on griping about. It had a short battery life. It had very noisy results above ISO 400, for today's standards.

it its time, it served me well too. But this "review" was very 2005, not 2015. Read my original post, or is that too much to ask?

Re: Silly....

I did read your post. I agree with some of your points. But look at it from the OP's perspective. For someone I am assuming that has moved from a point and shoot, would you consider the 350D an upgrade? If they felt that it allowed them to do what was not possible on a point and shoot wouldn't that be great to them? Sure you don't think it is great in today's terms but to the OP it is. That's all that matters.

Re: Silly....

Congrats LEGOfan, I'm really happy for you. I actually have one of these myself and consider it a great camera. Ignore the coments of others who would try and down pllay your enthusiasm. This Canon Xt will allow you to get some excellent shots and improve your skills to become a great photographer.

Cheers,
Scott
