Sony A6000 live HDMI-output quality?

i was very thrilled for 1080p quality of hdmi-live-out of the A6000, unfortunately the image quality of the live-view-out seems to be very low in quality, it looks like below 720p-quality. Is this because the live view quality simply is quite bad or do i have some settings wrong?

the setting "HDMI-resolution" is set to 1080p, HDMI-info is set to "on".

Those that use an HDMI recorder seem to be sure the output is 1080p, which is the only value I've seen claimed.

You are correct in assessing the live-view output as lower quality because the output is compressed. You can get uncompressed output by moving the mode dial to movie. You don't have to take a movie but just viewing in movie mode gives you an uncompressed wider angle view.

Given that the movie mode output is limited to 1920x1070 -- something like 2Megapixels -- I think you are making overmuch of the compression in photo mode.

Sorry for the thread necro, but I just wanted to post and say thanksfor this solution - I was wondering why the HDMI output on my A6000 was looking rubbish when connected to a live capture and stream system, and it turns out switching the dial to Movie Mode (which I have NEVER felt the need to use in all the years I've owned this camera) DOES indeed fix the ultra low-res output - the difference in quality is just night and day!

Cheers!

Re: Sony A6000 live HDMI-output quality?

Hi guys.
Sorry to post on an old topic.
I had the same issue with a sony a6500 and the solution was to switch to movie mode.
Now the quality is way better on hdmi out.
The problem is, the a6500 is on a zhyiun crane 3 that is connected to the camera via usb.
When I connect the usb, the hdmi out doesn't work. If i disconnect the usb from the crane 3, the hdmi out works again.
Any fixes?
Thanks.

Re: Sony A6000 live HDMI-output quality?

Hi, I have an a6000 and just got a capture card so I can connect it to my Mac to record video with QuickTime.

When I try to record video with QuickTime (with my a6000 connected to my Mac via HDMI and a capture card), the a6000 only sends 720p video.

I tried changing the mode dial to movie mode to see if that would fix it, but it's still 720p.

I've also changed the HDMI setting in the menu to 1080p.

Does anyone have any other solutions? I'd love to have 1080p output from the HDMI port.

Switch the dial to Movie mode on top of the camera. It will output clean 1080p if that's what is set in the menus.

If you are not getting that, then the issue is with your capture hardware or software, not the camera. For example, my Magewell USB capture hardware can do hardware scaling, so despite the camera outputting 1080p, I can make the PC receive a "native" 720p stream or less if I wanted.

Re: Sony A6000 live HDMI-output quality?

Ok, thanks. Maybe that's what the problem is... My capture card says that's it's HD 1080p, but maybe it's limiting the input
