Need advice from E-PL5, E-PL6 expert.

Last weekend I took some pictures at a family gathering using my E-PL6 and Panny 12-32.  When I got home and reviewed them, they were all out of focus.  I used A mode all day.  I tested the camera and autofocus worked in all the auto and scene modes, but not S, A, and M.

I dived into the menu looking for a reset, but didn't find it.  I began checking all the button assignments.  You can change button function on the Fn, Movie, 4 wheel points and L-Fn.  What the heck is L-Fn?  It is not on my camera.  Options for it are:

1.Off

2.AF Stop

3.ISO

4.WB

5.Exposure comp

6.AEL/AFL

7.Preview

8.One touch WB

9.AF area

10.AF Home

11.Manual focus

12.RAW

13.Test picture

14.various MySets

15.Live Guide

16.Digital Tele

17. HDR bracket

I forget what it was set on, but since I couldn't find the LFn button on the camera, I set it to Off and Voila!  autofocus now works in all modes.  Where is this button?  I suspect it was set on Manual focus or AF stop.  If I wanted to use this button for any of the other functions available, how would I do that?

The L-Fn button comes on the 12-50mm and the f/2.8 Pro zooms. The button's default is AF-Stop and unless you were using one of those lenses and pressed the L-Fn button it would have no effect on your camera. Some things you might look for

  • When you're in S, A, or M mode does the information on the LCD in the lower left say you are in MF? Does it show you are in one of the four MySets? If it's a MySet, it will tell you which one and you will also see the MF indicator if a MySet is causing it.
  • If you are in a MySet or the camera is in MF, go to Custom Menu B, Button and Dial Menu, check the button assignments to se if one has MF assigned and then check the Mode Dial settings to see what is assigned to P, A, S, M.
  • If the EPL-6 is not in MF and or a MySet, you should get the AF confirmation in the LCD when you pressed half-way down on the shutter-release and focus?
  • You may want to remount the 12-32mm and see if the problem goes away, if not, then try another lens to see if it's the EPL-6 or the 12-32 that may have a problem.

Re: Need advice from E-PL5, E-PL6 expert.

Good information. I am certain I had the L-Fn button set to some mode that killed the autofocus. I have no idea how that happened. Now that it is set to off, since I have none of the lenses with that function, I am sure everything will continue to work fine. I am still a little confused as to why the setting for that button has so many choices, many of which do not seem to apply to lenses. BTW, here is the menu page.

The default for L-Fn is Stop-AF. As you probably noticed by now, the user's guide is ambiguous at best and of little help with explanations of  what a feature does or is used for . Stop-AF only works if you are using CAF, continuous autofocus. Its only purpose is to stop autofocusing, if you want, when CAF is tracking a target, nothing more. Since you didn't have a lens with the L-AF button, there should be no way to trigger Stop-AF and mess up your AF. I still think something else was wrong.

I have an E-M10 and I had an EPL-5 until I replaced it with a GM5. L-Fn was set to Stop-AF on the EPL-5 by default and is still set that way on the E-M10. I have the 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro, which is my only lens with an L-Fn button. I never use the button and I don't think I've ever used CAF on either camera. I also never used the 12-40mm on the EPL-5. Never had any problem like yours with either camera.

Anyway, I'm glad your EPL-6 is working again.
