G15 freezing issues

I have a Canon Powershot G15 that I purchased from a local camera shop in 2012.  About a year ago the buttons on the back (menu, trash, wheel, etc.) stopped working.  I could turn the camera on and take a picture but could not use the zoom or any of the functions contained on the back panel.  I took it back to the store and they offered to send it in to Canon; they told me since it was past the warranty I would probably be charged for the repair.  To my surprise when I picked up the camera I was told they repaired it for free, leading me to believe that this problem may have been common, or that at least Canon had seen it with this particular model.  I am now having the exact same problem.  Supposedly the panel inside (?) was replaced, but it has now failed again.  I can not find any current discussion threads about this issue, though I am now finding a lot about this problem in past years and on other versions (i.e. G12).  I am going to call Canon directly but first I would love to find out if anyone else has had this problem so I can make the call informed.  I am also reading about "silent recalls" but can find nothing that leads to anything concrete.  Thanks.

Hello pearcesn,

I seem to have the same problem, and I'm ''glad'' I saw your comment. It started to occur 1 and half year after purchase. Sometimes it stopped, and I couldn't turn the shuttertime dial, zoom, and the menu was not accessable either. Sometimes after turning it off and on, it would work, but not immediately... I had reported it to the Dutch, and first suggested to try the putting back the factory settings. When that wouldn't help, I should send it to one of the repair companies they are working with in the Netherlands, with a fill-in-form in which I had to write down the problem. I haven't done this so far, because I bought the G16 instead... But this had the same problem twice after more than half a year. But when I took it to the shop where I bought it, it didn't show the problem... So I took it home again, and since then it seem to work again without any problem. The strange thing withe the G15 thought was that it started working again after I had bought the G16...I could'n find any comments on the internet, until yours... A pity is that there no firmware updates available at the Canon site.

I still haven't send it to the repairshop, maybe I'll visit it some day...

I hope that someone else here can give some answer to this problem.

Re: G15 freezing issues

I purchased the G16 in December 2015 and had intermittent freezing last  few weeks. It finally locked up completely this week and I have had to return it to Curry's where purchased for manufacture warranty repair. Having seen various comments on the internet about this camera it appears to be an on-going problem yet again from Canon. I had similar problems with SX50HS when the flash unit decided to fail exactly 2 weeks outside warranty. I have always purchased Canon but slowly and surely loosing confidence in this manufacturer.

I will update on the repair outcome over the coming weeks.

Re: G15 freezing issues

I purchase my Canon G16 during 2015 spring time.  The first freezing problem happened after about 4 months after purchased.  I put it to repair through Best Buy.  It took about 2 to 3 weeks.  The repair reported as top panel loosen.  I have been using it constantly without any problem.  Recently, the same problem happens again.  Unfortunately, it exceeds the warranty period.  I checked with online repair and it immediately asked for about $170 for repair.  Of course, I won't spend that kind of money for the camera that will properly have the same problem again.  Unfortunately, there are not a lots of other cameras which have similar specifications and size.  The problem seems common and I am looking for another brand for replacement.

Common? Nope. Never heard of it before this post.

That's really not a mature way to try an ensure you get a product (no matter the type of product) without flaws. Every product manufactured has a very slim chance of operational error.

Update on Canon G16 repair. Got camera back from Currys repaired under warranty and was told it was the panel inside needed replacing. Worked well for about 6 weeks  and now still having intermittent freezing problems. Lost all confidence in Canon quality and will be looking for an alternative

Exactly this problem has appeared with my gf's G16. She says it started after she forgot to insert the memory card and took some shots. When I had a look at the camera, it appeared to work and did a memory card format, but after a new restart the buttons and zoom again did not work.

This G16 is about 3 years old.
