Yeah didn't they think the same about the NX line? how they wanted to be #1 in 5 years?

we saw how that went.

however I suspect they will try something different in the smartphone realm that may be disruptive.

Yep, that didn't work out. But they still has a great platform, great sensor and great lenses. So if they will sell it to, say, Canon, it would be a killer.

yeah, not happening.

for starters, it would require their patent portfolio and also fab most likely, their processors probably wouldn't work well with DryOS so the firmware is useless, samsung is like the only ones using Tizen aren't they?

lenses - with a odd registration distance, I can't see canon being that interested - they wouldn't be making a THIRD mount.

the NX1 was DOA.  releasing a camera geared to sports, etc - and not having a pro lens over 150mm speaks of a pretty moronic decision. if they released it with a 100-400mm 4-5.6, then they wouldn't be in the situation they are today.

Olympus will stick just because it's so much of their Corporate DNA.

Same really with Fuji.

as long as the division doesn't bled money, they are content.

Sony - if the division doesn't make money, they are out.

Panasonic - hard to say.

Well, I probably put the mocker on Panasonic. Just picked up a GX8, so they'll probably be gone in a year

Samsung Nikon tie-up?

Hot rumor about this right now. If it proves true and Nikon comes out with new mirrorless cameras using Samsung tech, wonder how Canon will respond or be impacted with their M line.

I am really curious how this will play out.  Samsung already had a fairly complete lens lineup and some of the highest performance mirrorless bodies.  As a system, a longer telephoto zoom option was the main gap.  The only thing that was really holding Samsung back was a complete lack of brand recognition and exposure.

The rumor is still quite vague and doesn't indicate whether this will be a re-branding of the existing NX system, or if Nikon is just buying some patents and technical knowledge.  Either way, Canon will need to make some massive improvements to remain remotely competitive.

I'll wait to see this .. I suspect it's an agreement for sensors and moving away from Sony for Nikon, however the rest?

seems odd.

For starters moving to a new processor and OS would be a prohibitive cost.

Integration of samsung stuff into the existing nikon ecosystem, i doubt would be a trivial expense.

Also the theory was that this was leaked by someone high up in samsung - right, can you imagine the gag orders with this?

Also why could nikon buy out "everything" from samsung - for starters, they already know how to do fast AF on sensors (see nikon 1) they don't "need" samsung's technology which would be incompatible with their existing stuff.

Not to mention, there's no money in mirrorless as we've already seen.

It does seem odd, but it also makes some sense

Except, that is one of the main areas where Canon and Nikon both have serious deficiencies.  Samsung also understands smart phone communication better than anyone.

Depends on how everything gets integrated.  The biggest question is probably whether the NX lens protocol can be adapted to the F mount protocol and vice versa.  However, my guess is NX is dead and Nikon will just be harvesting pieces from the carcass.

Also the theory was that this was leaked by someone high up in samsung - right, can you imagine the gag orders with this?

The Nikon 1 stuff is fast, but Samsung had a few trick too.  The sensor in the NX1 is capable of full sensor readout at 240fps.  Their EVFs were class leading too.  Leveraging technologies like that could finally lead to a mirrorless camera that was truly better than an entry level DSLR in all regards and possibly compete with the prosumer level too.

Not to mention, there's no money in mirrorless as we've already seen.

It isn't just mirrorless, it is all cameras in general.

OMG, I'm so Excited right now.  I hope this Samsung-Nikon rumor is true.  It would solve both Nikon's lackluster Video and Samsung abandoning NX problems in 1 shot.

I have never been this excited about a rumor.  Finger-Cross!

It's NOT true, Samsung have denied it: Samsung denies rumour.

I still think it's more likely that Samsung will be supplying Canon with sensors in future.
