Canon SL1 and 100-400 does Eagles!
11

My 450D had been having some early shutter (or mirror) failure warnings.  It has a wheezing shutter sound on every frame and has shot a few black frames.  The 450D had a good long, well used life.  So I picked up a new body only SL1 a week before vacation.

Initial impressions, what a sweet little camera!  The canon battery capacity is a little small, I drained one with the IS on my 100-400 lens in a couple hours.  Lucky I had a couple spare batteries.  I have no other complaints.

While on vacation in Nova Scotia, Canada I had the opportunity to go on a boat tour and we ran across three pairs of Eagles...  Wow, that sure made carrying my 100-400 lens on vacation worthwhile!

All of these taken with the Canon SL1 and 100-400mm lens, shot JPG, with minimal editing on my iPad.

Those are very nice eagle pictures.  The first one is absolutely stunning, with the way the eagle was captured in motion like that.

Great shots!  Handheld or with a monopod/tripod?  If handheld, did you find the SL1/100-400 awkward to handle?

Handheld, not awkward. With a big lens and just about any camera... You are holding, supporting the lens with left hand, right hand is steadying on the camera/shutter button.. Honestly, camera is just along for the ride.

For all day shooting like at an air show, using a monopod is convenient and will save you some sore shoulders!

Is it just me or are these rather soft,  out of focus or just blurry? Or bad image hosting making them look so bad?

I was just thinking the same thing.

On my monitor, the first two look sharp enough to me.  Do they all look soft to you?

The originals are sharp.  I didn't take much effort to sharpen the resized posted ones.

Really nice captures.

Yup, these would handle sharpening very well.
