So much for Canon 'antiques' as investments

Amazon has a seller offering the old 300D selling the camera and kit lens for $139!

I paid $1,600 plus taxes for the 300D and kit lens. The CF card and battery grip added made it well over $2K.

Uhg!

You were ripped off.  I cannot imagine why anyone would want a 6 mpix digital camera even for free.

I can only assume you are talking about when you purchased new.

If so what's you point? It's now old technology and worth virtually nothing.

Twelve years is hardly enough for a mass-produced item to make 'antique' category.   It might be one in tech terms, but not the kind of antique collectors would go for.

Put it in a well-sealed box, store in a safe place.   Who knows, maybe n 300 years your descendants will find it, and after the expertise establishes that it is indeed a genuine turn-of-millennium production, and not something they just 3D-printed, it will sell for a fortune.

It's better to invest in lenses than bodies. Bodies are 'consumables' compared to lenses. Especially the L lenses are still holding their value well, though some have been superseded by newer and better optics.

I've sold a 40D for around 150 euros, bought it for around 700 euros in 2009. You can even buy an 1D mk I or II for around 500-700 euros, while new they would cost around 3000-4000 euros That would make it a very bad investment if you plan on selling it 10 years later!

How did you pay $1600 for the camera and kit lens when it first came out? I had my order in and I was among the first to receive it for $1,000 new. I thought it was a bargain at the time. BTW, mine still takes great pictures.

Jim the OP lives in Canada as do I.

I am right now looking at my bill of sale for my original 300D, Sept 16, 2003 from Vistek here in Calgary.

Cost $1599 plus Federal Tax (GST) of $111.93 for a total of $1710.93. If the OP purchased his 300D in any other province than Alberta then he could add another 7% provincial sales tax to the bill.

Cheers.

Steve

Got it. Thanks for the clarification. It is worth pointing out that Canon was in those days leading the revolution. They were among the first, if not the first, with a DSLR that utilized the full line of Canon lenses. Canon was the first to market a DSLR with lens for under $1,000 US$. Canon was the first to market a semi affordable full frame DSLR. So where has this cutting edge gone?

Don't you remember the Canon EOS 300D commercials? The camera dude and his wife in the football stands shooting the cheerleaders instead of the game? It's why I bought the 300D at the time.

And yes, Henry's Canada dinged me $1600 for it plus the extras like the $300 grip and all those taxes.

LOL. At one time I wanted a 40D so bad.... but I couldn't afford it. Good glass does hold it's value better than the cams.

Think about the cost of our old XT's the way you do your computers. Expendables. I have two old laptops which I now refer to as "boat anchor one" and "boat anchor two".

Oh I hear you, Stuart. Lot's of 'boat anchors' we use to go onto better stuff later. Lot's of money under the bridge too. The crazy thing is that the EOS350D was so much better than the 300D - I still have both but in the original boxes. My only regret is spending $369 plus tx's for a 96MB Sandisk CF card.

Ow! Yeah, I moved a 1TB drive from an external enclosure into the case on the weekend, and while digging around for some screws in the big box of cables and stuff I found two old 40GB drives that probably cost more in real terms than 1TB does now.

And can you use those old 40 GB drives now in a toaster or external enclosure? I found a couple myself and they are useless now. I had to destroy them.

Maybe, but I have thumbdrives that hold near as much, so I wouldn't try.

Yeah, IME spinners fail fast when you don't use them.

Hey your guys are just youngsters. I remember my first 40 Megabyte drive. Cost me $500.00. In 1991 I was a project officer on a large database contract. The contractor needed my approval for large purchases. One item he needed my approval for was 10,000 US$ for a one gigabyte hard drive. At that time people were concerned about how we were going to handle terabytes of data.

Of course, an antique Sony would have doubled its price.

No need to say Ugh!.  Digital cameras should be viewed as disposable and worthless immediately after purchase good only for capturing the images you need.  Spare no expense on your lenses, but really I don't think most people (even some pros) need more than a rebel.  I'm much more concerned about the lighting at this point.  I did buy a 5DII when they came out, but it was because of the whole DSLR video film making craze it sparked.  I just had to have it.  My last rebel was the T2i.  The T6s seems to have enough that's worth upgrading to.

I remember when I bought a external Jazz drive that used 1 gig cartridges.  My god, it doesn't get any better than this I thought.  My computer had a built in zip drive that could handle 100 meg cartridges.
