Even for those who use an adjustable, changeable lens camera instead of a cell phone, they may not bring it out more than a few times a year.

If they bought pretty much any camera from Nikon, Canon, Pentax or Sony in the last 5-7 years, they probable get pretty decent images using auto or Program. For occasional use with  kit lenses the weight would hardly matter, so what would be the point of changing systems?

On a trip you can always see the mobile phone or compact camera crowd who have used the opportunity of their holiday to buy a "proper" dslr camera duty free, complete with kit lens, to record their holiday with.

Not seeing your brand of camera when around the traps is an insecurity complex.

When using a GM1 with a Nocticron semi-professionally yesterday I felt no qualms that I was not getting professional-enough images. But one person there did say in a curious way - "that is a very small camera body you have".

The proof is in the eating and this is not the first time I have taken the GM1 out on serious shoots.

Now the question is on whether not "look-alike-slr" M4/3 cameras can be taken seriously by M4/3 shooters ....

Bravely flashing your GM1 or GM5 in public is the new-u ring of confidence (grin).

I own Pana GM1 now 1,5 month, and i was on one trip so far. Photo from GM1 already made to the book of some PhD of history. It was best, and better than all APS-C Nikons, Sonys, etc...I easily catch Full framers. If you have some know-how , know the lens, you can make super photos.

People often dont know, how good m4/3 can be. But like they alwayas say, its up to photographer, not to camera. If you are not satisfied with camera, and going to biger one, it probably wont bring you any benefit. If you dont know how here, neither you will there.

I think so too. I'd rather be a lone wolf than a sheepy flockster.

It highly depends on the region of the world you are living ....

I guess you are living in Northern America ....

In Asia m4/3 is rather popular, in Europe less so

The Nothern americans tend to think big, only big cameras are considered to be capable by many photographers

Yes, that's very conservative and prejudiced, but it seems to be a popular believe

One more thing is that the best known players in the US and European camera market are Canon and Nikon, and not Olympus and Panasonic

The mirrorless offerings of Nikon and Canon are half-hearted, still only a niche product ... and not m4/3 anyway

Over the last couple of years I've been surprised by how many m4/3 cameras I see in the streets. If they're not the dominant kind of exchangeable lens camera they must be getting close to it. This is in Edinburgh, a city much visited by tourists from all over the world.

I think it might haves something to go with availability.  All of the big box stores around me sell the nikon & canon dslr's and p&s's.  As far as mirrorless goes, a couple sony's and maybe a samsung.

I think the general public doesn't even know about m4/3.

I rarely go to "big box" stores, but the ones in NYC (BestBuy) carry a few Olympus and Panasonic M4/3 cameras.

Of course there's B&H here, which is a destination store, so you'll see tons of people from everywhere buying various camera equipment.

Interestingly, the P&S department used to be fairly crowded and now you'll very few people there. Thank you, iPhone.

Definitely not.

When I mention mirrorless or Micro Four Thirds to people and they look bewildered.

Re: Why do you not see more m4/3?

I don't think I saw anyone mention price. Both Canon and Nikon seem to have permanent rebate programs going so you can get an entry level DSLR with kit zoom for $500 (or a two-lens kit for $50-100 more). That's what I paid for my E-M10 during the current sale which started in mid May and ends in two weeks, but then it's back to $700. The E-PL7 goes for $600. So Canikon is significantly cheaper.

Then when you go to buy accessories, there's great third party support for Canikon...lenses from Tamron, Tokina, Sigma, plenty of flash options. Not so for MFT...Tamron has only one lens (superzoom), Tokina has only one lens (a mirror!!), Sigma has three primes and there are fewer flash options as well. Beginners looking for auto-everything are not going to snap up Samyang or adapted glass.

Why is MFT and other mirrorless more popular in Asia than USA? I think there is a market for smaller "enthusiast" cameras there. In the 1960s when Olympus debuted the original Pen half frame (actually single frame) cameras many other mfrs followed suit...Canon, Yashica, Petri, Agfa(!!), Ricoh, Fuji, Konica, Mamiya and Minolta all got into the act. These were very popular in Asia until super compact full frame 35s like the Rollei 35 and Olympus XA emerged. Olympus sold Pens up to 1986!
