Damaged Baseplate from Tripod Plate
1

I have been using an Olympus E-PM2 for a little over a year.  I day hike a lot and use a tripod quite a bit.  I was using a small Kirk Photo camera plate (~28mm x 38mm) to slip in and out of the tripod head. On a recent hike, cracks developed in the baseplate of the camera, and I can no longer use the camera on a tripod.  I don't think there is anything wrong with the Camera Plate from Kirk, I just don't think it was the best tool for the job.  I had previously used a plate from RRS and it was superb.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?  Can it be fixed easily?

It's possible that the bolt on the Kirk plate is  a bit too long for that camera such that when tightened, it bottoms out in the camera tripod socket and that by tightening it at that point the bolt puts a force on the socket pulling it out/away from the camera.

I think your assessment is bang on. That would explain why on long days hiking, the Kirk plate would come loose.
