Galaxy NX & 45mm 2D/3D lens?

Galaxy NX & 45mm 2D/3D lens?

So I recently purchased a Galaxy NX as well as the 16mm f/2.4 & 30mm f/2 pancake lenses.
I reckon the 30mm should make for a good general-use lens and the 16mm has me covered for landscape shots but I feel that only having those 2 lenses would leave me a little limited, so I'm looking for maybe one more to round off my set.

Obviously, in an ideal world, the 16-50mm S f/2-2.8 and the 50-150mm S f/2.8 would probably be the best lens combo available for the NX range, covering all the bases so to speak.
But each of them would cost me more than everything I've already purchased put together, so not really for me.

The 85mm f/1.4 looks good on paper, as well as giving me something more in the telephoto range but I'm just not sure how much I'd use it, especially since it's that bit bigger and one of the things I like about the NX range is general is that it's pretty compact (I have an old Canon D-SLR which never really got used enough due to the size and weight).
It also doesn't really mesh with the sort of photos I've tended to take in the past, which are more landscapes with a bit of macro stuff etc.

I'd also seen a relatively good deal for the 45mm f/1.8 2D/3D lens, which I find myself quite curious about. The 3D option intrigues me, though I'm not sure how often I'd use it (though I do have a 3D Samsung TV which I've never had any 3D content for, so it'd get used a bit for the novelty factor).
The size seems more in-keeping with what I'd like and it should double up as a decent portrait lens, if I'm not mistaken.

So with all that in mind, I have a few questions:

  1. Is the 3D version of the 45mm worth getting or would I be better with the normal one?
  2. Can anyone confirm from experience that the 3D lens works ok with the Galaxy NX?
I can't seem to find anything definite, just a lot of references to the NX300 being the only body that can handle the 3D effect, though they all appear to pre-date the Galaxy NX's announcement.
  3. Are there any other lenses that would better compliment the 16mm & 30mm that I should be considering instead?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I can tell you that the Galaxy Camera EK-GN120 supports 3d. At least Samsung claims it is supported.

Shopping for lenses is really a personal preference. What would compliment it depends on what you wish to do. My suggestion would be to play with what you have and try to see if you can overcome any short comings. Later on you'll get a better feel for what you'll need if anything else.

Of course the 3d novelty is really up to you. Check amazon reviews to read about some of the short comings that comes with shooting in 3d. If I had a 3D TV and the money to waste I'd grab the 3d version because I'd be curious about what it would be like to see my images in 3d. Though I don't think my nx500 does 3d.

Once you have a 3D-enabled TV it might be worth trying it.

(Although you probably already know that 3D in its current re-incarnation, especially on amateur devices, is maybe a bit more of a gimmick)

I've never used it with mine, but according to Samsung it is compatible with the Galaxy NX, NX30 and NX300 .

I have the 2D 45/1.8 and the 85/1.4 but in your case consider the 60/2.8 Macro (which doubles for portraits) if you can live with a slower autofocus.

Re: Galaxy NX & 45mm 2D/3D lens?

Unfortunately I can't comment on the 3D version of the lens working as the one I bought was a duff so had to go back - I now have the 2D version and wouldnt hesitate to say it's my favourite lens with the Galaxy NX and I own the 20mm, 30mm, 60mm, 16-50mm pz and 50-200mm.
The 2D version also has a dedicated AF button which the 3D version does not, if that's important to you.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the S lenses as they are too expensive for use with the Galaxy NX (my opinion).

I wold recommend getting the 60mm macro though - I'd say this has better novelty value than the 3D 45mm, and is a fantastic lens!

I think the 3D version is optically better given it has 9 Diaphragm Blades (better bokeh) compared with 7 on the non 3d version.

I stand corrected. Just recently read about it in the manual. Thanks

I've 2D/3D version, but it is NOT worth for 3D - only some fixed parameters, too small eye distance .. for 2D it is full okay.

Re: Galaxy NX & 45mm 2D/3D lens?

My thanks to everyone for their advice and input.

I went for the 3D version of the 45mm in the end.
Took it, along with the 16 & 30mm lenses to Athens for a week and had a bit of a play with them. Must say I love how sharp it is and the DoF, got a few lovely shots with it.

When I got back from my holiday and hooked the Galaxy NX up to my TV, the 3D effect wasn't that impressive     ...then I worked out I needed to switch on the glasses *facepalm*
It's a gimmick, obviously but it gives you something a little different. And the girlfriend loves the 3D photos of her dog.

Thanks again

Re: Galaxy NX & 45mm 2D/3D lens?

2D/3D lens has for 3D a very small eye distance, you also can select only few parameters (aperture is fixed to 6 etc) - 2D function is very good, but 3D you can forget.

For 3D it's better to use a single lens camera with cha-cha-methode or a 3D cam/camcorder with two lenses.

3D lens for NX or Pana 3D lens (for Lumix etc) is wasted money.

You are correct about the limitations of the lens for 3D. But, have you actually used the lens for taking 3D on any NX camera? Or just read the manual?

You can take interesting 3D pictures and video. And the combination of shallow DOF that an APS-C camera has and 3D makes for 3D that is quite distinct from that taken by small-sensor camcorders, which typical have very poor resolution. I have shot video using many 3D cameras and camcorders.

Here were my first experiments taking 3D with the lens, on the NX500:

Harhar, I have (crazy!) more 3D equipment then fingers on my hands, also NX..uff,uff...,

2D/3D, Lumix 3D lens, TD10, Fuji W1, W3, 3D monitors, 3D TVs.

I changed from 75% 3D photos/videos to 4K

price of Loreo 3D was (new) € 20 ... it's worth € 19.90

It was only a relatively small amount more expensive than the 2D-only version of the lens (£30 or so, I think), so I don't think it's a waste really.
For a small additional fee, I like having something that offers me more options - photography is, for me, supposed to be an enjoyable holiday and I enjoy being able to mess around with that sort of thing.

The 3D effect is actually quite decent in some of the shots, which given I'd had the lens less than a week and was just messing around with it, is quite acceptable IMO. The effect is pretty similar to (non-animated) 3D movies in their current form, a series of flat images that appear to be at different depths (animated movies, such as the Despicable Me series, tend to be better in 3D as they can be rendered so the objects all have proper depth).
It may not be perfect but it's still eye-catching, so to speak.

Apologies for bringing this old thread up, for some reason DPR specifications comparison of these lenses say that the 3D version has 9 blades vs non 3D verison has 7. I have sent an enquiry to them if it is a mistake.

However Samsung website says 9 blades. So safe to assume DPR just got it wrong in specs sheet? Reason for asking, currently the 3D version is on special price and not very different to the non 3D. However if both are identical with just the difference is 3D, then I'd rather get non 3D, that way at least there is a much more useful AF/MF button instead of 3D/2D button!

I've owned both the 3d and the non 3d version and although I can't confirm about the number of blades, I haven't noticed any difference between the 2 at all (not sure I'd be able to anyway though?)

However if there is a deal on the 3d I'd probably go for that as the 3d effect is quite good, albeit a bit of a novelty.

On the other hand, the 3D construction is a bit more complicated (so it could be dangerous in case of damage or servicing), and the selection thingy at the side is A/M for the NON 3D one, which is very good to have on lens, while the otjer is 3D/2D , or something?

This is true, in fact the first 3d version I bought was DOA, it seemed the aperture blades had stuck in the 3d position.

You're right too about the af/mf switch however when I had the non 3d lens this was a pain with the galaxy NX as switching between af and mf also turned the DMF off for some reason. This is not an issue with other cameras though.
