NX500 in the Canon 7D bag
5

I'm one of the large(?) Canon 7D crowd that got a bit underwhelmed by the mkII successor, especially with the NX1 outperforming it on about everything. So I decided to stay put with the 7D for macro/sport/birding etc, and add the NX500 to the collection for ISO-invariant high dynamic landscaping as well as walk around lightweight P/S camera. This way I keep options open to future developments.

It's excellent for the job I got it for, beyond expectation. Image quality, dynamic range, smart high dynamic setting, all very satisfying. even a wink-controlled shutter actuation, So many gadgets to find out.

Not too happy with the add on flash, but then again, who needs one with such impressive low light performance and enhanced dynamic ranging?

Buffer for multiple shots is not impressive, but hey, what can you expect from a half priced NX1. On the other hand, speed and focus tracking are excellent.

im quite impressed with my NX500 as well, i just wish it had a shutter speed dial at least like my fuji did.  I find when using manual focus lenses i spend more time going through menus then shooting photos.

I actually didn't like the shutter speed dial on Fujis. It limits you to only full stops and isn't as fast to change as a wheel right at your fingertips.

I'm curious as to why a shutter speed dial would be beneficial when shooting manual lenses on the NX500? I would think the wheels work fine and the shutter speed would be displayed as usual on the LCD screen.

I was wondering the same thing.

I'd even say the upper wheel is a shutter speed dial in Manual (if you take ISO off of Auto).

Ditto for me.  I had an X100S and the shutter speed dial was so cumbersome to use.  To use speeds between the full stops I had to switch to the dial, and it could only go up or down 2/3 stops.

For manual exposure on the Nx500, I use one dial for aperture and the other for shutter speed.  If I want to change ISO, it's one button press away (down arrow).  Same with exposure compensation if I'm using Auto ISO on manual exposure (Fn button).

Best regards,

Mic

Re: NX500 in the Canon 7D bag

Pretty interesting review and discussion.

It's clear that you MUST be able to control speed at 1/3 stop when on Speed Priority mode, you are creating a picture by controlling precisely how movements will be represented in it!

The NX 500 seems to be a clear winner with it's performance/price ratio, even it's presentation seems over it's price class!

Make sure you update to the latest firmware. It improves the af and buffer quite a bit.
