SX240 scratched front lens element - again!
1

My SX240 had the lens block changed by Canon under warranty because of a deep scratch in the front lens element (probably caused by the automatic lens cover). I have tried to be extra careful after I got the camera back (about 1.5 year ago) but this week I discovered a small scratch in exactly the same spot.

It is not visible in shots yet, but from previous experience I know that the scratch will get bigger. When it does, I don't really know what to replace the SX240 with. The SX700 and SX710 doesn't interest me at all. The Panasonic TZ70 looks promising, but is too expensive. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a mint, second hand SX240

Here are two shots I took with the camera recently

I don't know why Canon hasn't yet been called out on their destructive lens covers.  I basically had to dispose of my G-12 after the 2 scratches from the cover eventually got so bad that the images were unusable.  Canon refused to admit responsibility when I asked them to fix or replace it.

Nice Cherry Tree pic! I have the sx280, and was wondering if you had any tips for attaining such great bokeh on the powershot?

Thanks for your kind comment. It isn't always possible to get an out of focus background with these cameras, but the way I do it is to zoom all the way in, focus as closely as I can on the motif and position myself to get as much distance between the motif and the background as possible.

In the shot of the cherry blossom the building in the background was probably 150 to 200 metres away.

The SX240/260 and SX270/280 are very versatile cameras - I always carry mine with me. Here is my Colombia gallery - with the exception of one image all are shot with the SX240:

I edit all my photos with Photoshop Elements 12 or 13. I run CHDK on my SX240 so I have access to RAW files from the camera and most adjustments are done with the RAW converter in PSE. The RAW files gives me a little bit more "room" to recover shadows and highlights.

Here is another SX240/CHDK shot:
