Upgrade from G11 to G7X - Is it worth it?

I really haven't had much opportunity to play around with my new G7X. With what little time I had, I did a single shot comparison - both cameras in automode.

G11 Image

G7X Image

What do you think? What is a reasonable size print based on crispness for each of these?

I can see that the G7X image is slightly better - but is it worth the difference? I am not too impressed.

Maybe my quick test is not a fair comparison. Maybe the G7X shines better under some other conditions. Please try to convince me to not return the G7X.

Thanks in advance for your opinions. I value your comments.

All I can say is that I passed on the G7X.  I thought the S95 was as good, and the G15 was somewhat better.  Instead of the G7X, take a look at a Caon refurbished G15 for around $250.

Re: Upgrade from G11 to G7X - Is it worth it?

In my eyes, there's really no comparing the two photos. I did a blind test but it took less than a second to spot which is which. The G7X is better (or on par) in every aspect, center and corner sharpness, chromatic aberrations, color rendition. With respect to your G11, I'm fairly certain even modern smartphones would produce a better image under those conditions. On top of it all the G7X is smaller, gives wider field of view, and will greatly outperform the G11 in low-light situations. But as your question demonstrates, this is very much a matter of personal taste, so only you can decide if it was worth it for *you*.

Re: Upgrade from G11 to G7X - Is it worth it?

I think this type of test is very subjective to the person looking at the images. It depends what type of photography you are in to. At first glance yes they do look similar on a computer screen...if you print, then the larger G7X sensor will give larger prints. However, the G11 is a great little package. I used to have one. Now a G1X. In the right hands, both cameras perform under normal daylight conditions and it if often hard to tell the difference unless you are looking for minor differences. I would assume the G7X is similar. When the light falls, then the bigger sensor of the G7X will come into its own - So if you want larger prints in daylight conditions and a camera for darker conditions this is ideal. The G11 won't compete there. Put side by side in DP reviews to see ISO tests. If you mainly shoot daylight, then it will be hard to tell the difference in my experience. Colour (white balance?) and sharpness are slightly different in the examples, plus the wider lens on the G7X is a plus? This is very subjective and down to personal taste though....😎

Re: Upgrade from G11 to G7X - Is it worth it?

This is not the most fortunate comparison (to say at least), as in good (day)light almost any camera nowadays is good enough (comparative).

Also, [Auto] mode is heavily dependent on camera`s internal programming which basically tries to read your mind and provide what it thinks you wanted to accomplish - while doing it just fine, where G7 X excels are more manual (semi or full manual) modes, providing much more creative possibilities (due to its lighter/faster lens and bigger sensor).

If these are the conditions you will usually be shooting in, then maybe G7 X is not worth it - you`ll pay much more for it, and you won`t even be using it`s real potential.

On the other hand, if you want to shoot low-light photos as well, then as already mentioned here, G7 X is just much, much better - no comparison here. To see what we mean, it would be good to make some (really) low light images yourself, and not just in [Auto] mode. Zooming in low-light conditions is also something worth testing

Buying a fast sports car may not be worth it if the only thing you`ll be using it for is picking up groceries from the market nearby. Again, as people said, in the end it`s really up to you what you find worth the price you pay.

G7X looks sharper but G11 looks better in the green color tones, this probably has to do with CCD vs CMOS or also because the different digics.

I dont agree with the people who say that nowadays almost any camera can give you good results in good light, IMO even in good light there are lots of standards that can be compared, an example would be that some newer cameras are compromised by their high NR in any mode even low ISO.

Re: Upgrade from G11 to G7X - Is it worth it?

Some great points made with replies from others so far...

In good light, a modern, decent mobile absolutely will take shots nearly indistinguishable from what a stand alome camera provides. Especially if viewing them on computer and not cropped.

Where the g7x smokes g11 is with bokeh and its ability with low light shots, both in terms of noise and versatility offered.

Go out and do some evening shooting of static and moving subjects, or take some portraits and see how the g11 fairs. Not only with how the image looks, but how easy it is to satisfactorily catch the image.

More G11 vs G7X photos

Thanks for the valuable insight. You've given me alot more to think about.

Here are some additional compare photos I took this evening. The kids set up a campfire in the backyard. There is also a house light illuminating from behind me.

G11 image

G7X image

Again, both were in automode (flash off). I did not use a tripod (but should have). At least half the time, the G11 misfocused badly. (Again, notice the wider angle by default of the G7x).

Try some twilight/evening shots. Before dark. Shoot in av mode and keep an eye on ISO and aperture. I think you'll find the g7x makes it much easier to get satisfactory images and they'll be significantly cleaner. I have the S120 (same sensor as g16) and really miss the versatility of the larger sensor. Just makes things so much easier.

I own a G7X and it was after months of deciding what actually to purchase. I picked what I wanted, and I am happy and don't regret it.

I have other cameras, but this one was to be a Carry Around with the abilities of close to my DSLR. I wanted small, high quality, fit in pockets, and easy to carry.

If you don't like it, return it. Only you can really be happy with your purchase. I read so many reviews, opinions, and the like.. I was tired and  I just pulled the trigger.

Here are some photos with my G7X... out of the camera, not technically good, or even good or PP'd. But these were all in my "Testing / Playing" phase. Plus.. I pretty much keep any "Good" picture of my dog (non blurry or just dumb).

Garage, Low Light, Daytime, hand held with screen flipped up. I like this feature.

Outside, Handheld.

Light was tricky, it was getting dark because of the storm, hand held, good test photo.

As it has been said, older G cameras can keep up in certain situations, which is awesome. Not so in other situations, especially if you know what you´re doing. G7X is technically superior camera, and it´s only up to you if you can let it live up to your expectations, if you set it well and so on. I´d buy G7X or Sony RX100 for compact cam without hesitation. These are awesome, and generally "best ones".

Re: More G11 vs G7X photos

Thanks guys... Did not mean to steal the thread. I wanted to show the versatility of the G7x. But yeah.. .she is cool. My first dog.

The last pic was again to test the contrast of things.. it was getting dark because of the storm, and the colors were just really neat.

I was very shocked on how this photo turned out for a quick snapshot. Dark and yet, kind of clear.

Thanks for the comments, but I would hate for the OP to return his camera. I love it. I dont take selfies.. but the swivel movement helps me take "Close to the Ground" photos. Which is really cool.. for dog pix!

Re: Upgrade from G11 to G7X - Is it worth it?

Just found my old G-11, haven't used it in 4 years. Took it to France in 2011. Just printed a photo from Annecy, France of a boat canal, 12" x 18", came out real nice. Decided to use it as my backup for me d750 when I'm out at night, dinner, or early morning when I just want to capture some things in a simple way.

Annecy, France, the alps, boat canal. Badly overcast sky, used ND filter to do the best I could. Enjoy.

The greenish colder pictures of G7X are seriously annoying, imo G11 looks nicer colour wise. This is one of the main reason why I didn't buy the G7X yet, too many samples that I have seen are too green for my taste. I don't know why did Canon do this, because pictures on SX, S and G models are not as green and cold as on G7X, hopefully Canon will get it better with G7X mk2, if not then there is still hope with RX100 mk4.

I mean take a look, every picture of G7x in this comparison to Rx100 and LX100 is too green or too cold, really dislike this.

skin is way too green on G7x

G7X is too green or too blue, RX100 is too red or blue but the picture with the women is a lot nicer and more natural looking than on G7X while LX100 and GM1 seems to be the best in almost every comparison, just right, not to red, blue or green, maybe just a bit too green in the last comparison.

Everyone has their own taste. They look fine to me. Another person could look and say wtf is the green in these other shots... So notch down the green a level in settings. Problem solved.

Re: Upgrade from G11 to G7X - Is it worth it?

Thanks for those comparison photos. From reading threads people say that the G7X is meant to produce better jpegs than the RX100iii (and that's what I shoot) but these photos would make me wonder.

The G7X look nice on their own BUT when you compare them to the RX100iii it appears that the RX100iii photos are more 'natural' and that the G7X seem warmer.

Oh, my brain hurts from analysis-paralysis. And to make matters worse the Sony isn't available locally so I can't spend good time handling them both. I tried one for less than 5 mins in a store in Dublin last weekend and was underwhelmed by the viewfinder, which brings the G7X into consideration for me.  I'll have a chance to play with them both in a month but hope I don't spend the next month viewing comparisons and opinions....but know I will.

I spent few months like you, RX100 III or G7X.

I finally chose G7X because of a combination of faster lens, larger zoom (better for portraits), touch screen (touch focus in stills and video is absolutely nice) and of course, much lower price.

Warmness is somthing you can easily adjust with Whit Balance in camera or post processing even on JPEG.

For me it was particulary neutral and helped me a lot to decide, the Cameralabs review: Whole G7X analysis is done in comparison against RX100 II and RX100 III.

http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_PowerShot_G7X/

I recommend you to go through all the review. To get full picture of strengths and weakness on every aspect and chose what best fits your shooting style.

An excerpt of the conlcusion:

Sony RX100 III vs Canon G7X

Sony's RX100 III is the most obvious rival to the Canon G7X as both share essentially the same body size and sensor within. There's little to choose between them in photo and video quality, although pixel-peepers will notice the Sony is a bit sharper in the corners at 24mm and the Canon is a little crisper at longer focal lengths. The Sony is also less aggressive with its noise reduction, resulting in finer detail on in-camera JPEGs at high ISOs, but once I get to test RAW files I'm expecting the original data to be similar

[...]

Indeed much of the decision between the G7X and RX100 III boils down to these three main features: longer zoom (with shallower DOF at telephoto) and touchscreen on the Canon vs built-in EVF on the Sony.

[...]

Ultimately I can't say one of these cameras is better than the other as it depends on your preferences on the features above, but having used both models extensively, I would be very happy with either.
