Should there now be a separate forum for video enthusiasts?

A simple (perhaps simplistic) question... Should there be a different forum or for video lovers of the nx1 and 500? It just seems that this forum had been taken over by video enthusiasts so I no longer feel it's about the still photography features /abilities of the Samsung range which I thought was the original idea

I do think we should have a separate forum. Questions, concerns and reviews can be very different in both general, stills as well as for video work.

While I'm sure NX500 is a very fine camera for photography and I think it would indeed be a very nice B cam once I save and get an NX1, people who look at it for video seem to complain about a lot of things that, while it would matter to some, it won't if you are not shooting video that often.

Just did a quick count and of the 60 threads on the first page, 10 of them are about video. Hardly seems like enough to need a separate forum.

It would be certainly be convenient to have a video subforum. That said, many of us are equally interested in video and stills, which is what draws many to the NX1 in the first place. It's the strongest hybrid camera on the market right now.

That is, unless the aforementioned, hypothetical, "Video Forum," were to encompass all cameras from every maker, as this forum used to be before it changed its name to the Samsung

Re: Should there now be a separate forum for video enthusiasts?

I voted no, i bought the NX500 90% for video and 10% for stills. Still photography doesnt pay anything for me, but i can upload tutorial or review videos to youtube and be paid for views. Its not much, but its something i am exploring.

I dont come to these forums to talk about still photography, i come here to talk about the samsung camera and lenses. There are thousands of forums or sections where you can focus on the art of photography -- i thought the point of these forums was the gear and not so much the art. I mean its called "samsung talk" and not "black & white composition", no?

I don't think there is really enough activity in this forum in general to need a sub form.

Also many people are using the video to capture images...it's not something I even considered until I saw some of the amazing captures people have gotten in video.

In the past video captures were not great at all..but now with 2k - 4k video is is a nice option to have...I cant even imagine it a consideration a year or so ago

Re: Should there now be a separate forum for video enthusiasts?

This is a photography forum for photography gear. For video a video camera is going to be a lot more useful with quiet lenses and better zoom. These large high mega pixel sensors are not really optimum for video.

Also this is not just a NX forum and the thought of it filling with 4K fans talking moaning that a camera does not have codec 42.5.6.8.92.3.93 and 70 fps, or the lack of a microphone jack or stabiliser and of course lens noise does fill me with dread. If Samsung put in 5 axis stabilisation that will cause problems with people who think these are video recorders.

I realise there are a group of people to whom photography now is just just taking 5 minutes of 4K video on the random chance they have a 8 mp frame in it that is a keeper but that is depressing also.

Your incorrect statement about the usefulness of hybrid cameras for video is evidence why there should be both video and still photography here. You might actually learn about video, and see, literally, exactly what a large sensor camera offers for video, and why many pro videographers use them for video.

Um, you do realize if you own a NX1, your "photography gear" is a video camera. And a pretty damn good one at that. I use mine professionally for both stills and video. I do like the "buy a video camera" curmudgeon posts, they have a nice, cranky "get off my lawn" feel to them.

If video isn't your thing, why not just ignore the threads instead of advocating a forum personalized toward your specific interests? Its really not that difficult to simply scroll past a video thread without clicking. Try it.

There are already 30 forums for the various cameras, splitting them by stills and video would make an already bloated site even larger. If m43 can't even get a Panasonic/Olympus split, the far less active Samsung forum will remain unified, sorry to burst your grumpy bubble.

Why is it grumpy just to have another view to your own? As Allan, the moderator, alluded it might be possible to have a general video forum rather than Samsung specific.

I am confused - there is already a general video forum - "Digital Video Talk" - here. It is not camera specific.

A contrary view is not grumpy, saying things like "the thought of filling it with 4K fans" or "moaning that a camera" and "fill me with dread," falls within the definition of grumpy.

There is a dedicated video forum on this site. Its called "Digital Video Talk"

There aren't a lot of Samsung users posting and they're mostly clustered on this forum, again why request to splinter a forum just to cater to certain users specific interests when the community as a whole benefits from the knowledge gained by dissecting the functionality of the cameras?

I asked the question as a) I've seen a number of people express disquiet about how heavy leaning the forum was becoming to video posts b) I'm one of them.

I'm not specifically requesting a split just asking for people's opinions - just a democratic interest. So far it would seem that not many participants are bothered one way or the other, which is fine.

Re: Should there now be a separate forum for video enthusiasts? no

Usually I find most things interesting on these forums but I am afraid 4K just leaves me cold. I do not even mind if a camera has only 720p so it is that bad. I like doing video segments but HD looks fine so I suppose it is just a case of sorting out the photography items from the video stuff.

Is there an upload in posts for insertion for video as there is for stills? I cannot see how the quality of any persons video captures can be assessed in the same way as photographic stills. It is a completely different world. The difference between an art museum and a cinema.

To be brief, no.

Modern cameras are both stills and video cameras in one. The idea that forums should be separated is an archaic one that does not reflect the modern paradigm of camera design.

The board is about the camera, not how you use it.

If you want to talk specifically about stills or video in general, there are sub boards on the site specifically for that purpose if that is what you are interested in. This sub board is about the EQUIPMENT, and that covers both stills and video for the camera under discussion.
