Brand new E-M1 doesn't seem to recognise lens

I have just bought an E-M1 and it doesn't seem to recognise that there is a lens attached.

The camera won't display Liveview either on the rear LCD or the EVF - it is just black.

I can't set an aperture even in A mode - the aperture just shows as -.- in the display.  Focusing is set to MF and I can't switch to AF.

I have tried 3 different lenses - 12-40, 45 f/1.8 and a Panasonic 14-45mm.  The lenses don't fit smoothly - the last 1" or so when I turn the lens to lock feels quite rough although I do get a click as the lens locks.

Am I missing something really basic or do I have a faulty body?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Brand new E-M1 doesn't seem to recognise lens

I cannot think of anything that would cause it not to recognize an mFTs lens.  However, I have had mine since they first came out, so I may have forgotten some setting.  The lens attachment on mine is very smooth.  Maybe someone else has had this problem and knows what might cause it.

Thank you.

I think that I am going to take the camera back right now.

You will want to update firmware to 3.0.  You can check the firmware you have in the MENU Wrench>firmware.  Makes some things like AF with old lenses work much better.

If you have not done it before, Get Olympus updater.  It is probably on the CD in your camera box, if not you can download it.

Thanks Phil.

The very good reports from BIF photographers on this forum about  Fw 3.0 was one of the main reasons that I dumped my DSLR and converted entirely to M4/3.

Chris,

What is a BIF-photohgrapher?

I have already read "Birds in Flight" and so on. But all this says me nothing, It must be something funny? OR?????

He is probably referring to the improvements in C-AF contained in that firmware update, which would make the camera work better for taking photographs of birds in flight.
