120 FPS on NX1 Video?

Hi guys,

The NX1 can record video at 120fps at 1080 right?

I've tried the 1920x1080 (50p) option in the menu settings, converted it using DVDFab, put the converted file into After Effects and it is only 50 fps?
Am I being dim or something? haha

Is 1920x1080 (50p) definitely 120FPS? Maybe it's the conversion software?

The NX1 is a lot different to my Canon camera so I am having to learn a brand new camera, so if there's anything you think I should know, I'd really appreciate it!

I don't own the camera but from other discussions here and from reading the manual, the answer is "No". If your country uses PAL, choose 1920 x 1080 (25p). For NTSC, choose 1920 x 1080 (30p). You also need to set the movie rate. In shooting mode, press MENU -> (Movie Icon) -> Fast/Slow Movie and select x0.25. The actual shooting fps then becomes selected fps x 0.25. I guess that means PAL only provides 100 fps versus 120 fps for NTSC but the speedup/slowdown ratio is the same.

In the video menu, choose MOVIE SIZE (FHD 30p)
then select FAST/SLOW MOVIE in the same menu and choose x0.25 (120p)

Hope that's clear.
The higher framerates are sort of hidden. The Sony FS700 is like that, too.

The Fast/Slow Movie option is not available when the mode dial is set to Auto.

Why would he do that? 100 or 120fps are not PAL or NTSC standards anyway, so he can select whatever gives him 120fps.

The frame rate selection is somewhat odd and not properly documented. I have tried to compile some information on this in a previous post and its follow-up.

I have also inquired Samsung about my questions, but they were not able to answer most of them. I hope a new firmware update will clear this up.

What are you talking about, they're perfectly documented in the manual. Of course that means reading the manual, which many seem to ignore.

Not really. At most, a bit counter intuitive.

Btw, I'd like to see a 120fps mode with audio and a 180/240 slowmo mode for limited duration (say 5-10 sec).

Yeah I did read and see that, but it still doesn't say 120FPS. Imo Samsung should have made it a little more clearer.
It would be easier if they just had the mode selection as one, instead of Fast/Slow Movie.
It's odd that there isn't a proper 'Movie/Video mode' too (on the top of the camera) :/

Dear Straw Man,

Maybe I wasn't precise enough with my statement. Before I inquired Samsung Germany, I thoroughly searched the manual to answer my questions, but I couldn't find any answers. When contacting Samsung Germany, they couldn't answer them either (the only response I got was that they would forward my questions to the development and research department, whose answer I haven't yet received).

These are the questions that I directed to Samsung:

1) Which real recording frame rates are used with the following settings:

a) Video Out: NTSC, Movie Size: FHD 23.98P 1920x1080 (23.98p), Fast / Slow Movie: x1 (23.98p);

b) Video Out: NTSC, Movie Size: FHD 24P 1920x1080 (24p), Fast / Slow Movie: x1 (24p);

c) Video Out: PAL, Movie Size: FHD 24P 1920x1080 (24p), Fast / Slow Movie: x1 (24p);

d) Video Out: NTSC, Movie Size: FHD 30P 1920x1080 (30p), Fast / Slow Movie: x1 (30p);

e) Video Out: NTSC, Movie Size: FHD 30P 1920x1080 (30p), Fast / Slow Movie: x0.5 (60p);

f) Video Out: NTSC, Movie Size: FHD 30P 1920x1080 (30p), Fast / Slow Movie: x0.25 (120p);

g) Video Out: NTSC, Movie Size: FHD 60P 1920x1080 (60p), Fast / Slow Movie: x1 (60p);

h) Video Out: NTSC, Movie Size: FHD 60P 1920x1080 (60p), Fast / Slow Movie: x0.5 (120p).

Helpful is only a statement with a precision of at least 3 digits after the comma, because these digits are important for synchronization (e.g. with an audio track).

2) Can you confirm that using the setting "FHD 23.98P 1920x1080 (23.98p)" will cause a frame rate of 23.981 fps (and not 23.980 or 23.976 fps) being stored in the file headers.

Is this a firmware bug?

3) Can you confirm that using the setting "Movie Size: FHD 30P 1920x1080 (30p)" will cause different frame rates stored in the file headers depending on the setting of the "slow movie" function, i.e. sometimes 29.970 fps and sometimes 30.000 fps? (refer to previously mentioned cases 1d, 1e, 1f)

If yes, why?

4) Can you confirm that using the setting "Movie Size: FHD 60P 1920x1080 (60p)" will cause different frame rates stored in the file headers depending on the setting of the "slow movie" function, i.e. sometimes 59.940 fps and sometimes 60.000 fps? (refer to previously mentioned cases 1g and 1h)

If yes, why?

(translated from German)

I did not find any section in the manual which would answer these questions or give any indication about the exact frame rates being used.

Best Regards,
Jan Behrens

Why would he do that? 100 or 120fps are not PAL or NTSC standards anyway, so he can select whatever gives him 120fps.

As I said, I don't own the camera, so don't know specifically about the NX1 but with most cameras, once the region is set to either PAL or NTSC, the user only sees the fps options applicable to that region.  e.g. if set to PAL, the user would see 1920 x 1080 (25p) as an option but not 1920 x 1080 (30p).  Of course the region can be changed back and forth if necessary but that soon becomes a pain in the butt.

Good luck with getting your answer.

I've been using Pluraleyes for awhile, audio sync is easy, results are perfect, and no need to sweat the small stuff. YMMV.

4 times ("x0.25") 30 frames is 120 frames, and you could have just record in this setting to experience what it does (the Aristotelean way), I do agree they could have been much clearer with this one. Samsung manuals in general are good reads.

I do not agree about the Movie mode, the Samsung way was a revelation for me, just press the red button in whatever mode you are, and whatever setting you have, one less thing to do, and in general this program wheels are the only anachronistic things in modern cameras, there must be another way (that I am not aware of yet!). The NX touch screen and interface is another excellent Samsung implementation that everytime I use a dSLR, I want to just throw it away!

Re: 120 FPS on NX1 Video?

Without mode dial you need dials for A, S, ISO and EC with AUTO position on every one (and 0 on EC). FUJI XT1 did it that way. If you want A just set S to auto, S is A to auto, everything in auto equals P. It works but you have to have at least two physical dials plus function switch button or four dials tomake it usable. That's expensive apparently, so they make cameras with mode dials (and they are somewhat fool prof with images and colors and GREEN MODE for everyone not into photography).

I like the Fuji's thing as well, it is different, and it works, but this is something that you turn MORE dials. What I meant, was, that I would like to change MODE with no dials at all! Something that you can choose taping the touch screen twice (par example), I am sure it would be easier(and most importantly quicker) than turn a Dial, or at least, put JUST the basics on the mode dial (PSAM+AUTO) or 3-4 configurable ones, or the ability to choose where to put each (I could put M+AUTO+S next to each other!). I mostly use M, S and AUTO, and it takes "some" time to go from M to AUTO etc. I know, it sounds a bit paranoid!

The 2 wheels on NX500 is an excellent idea and makes such a small camera so practical to use.

I definitely don't need the MOVIE mode anymore!

Hi,

I own a NX1 for some months now, and I'm struggling with slow motion settings. When I've selected 1080 (25p), the "0.25x" option (for getting 100fps) is shaded, so not available. I'm pretty sure, that I've used it succesfully, right after I've bought the camera and was playing around.

But now the setting somehow is not available anymore? I've read the manual, but there seems to be no restriction for the 100fps except for the resolution (which I've set to 1080 25p, as I said) and the mode not being "Auto", as someone told above. I can only chose "0.5x", resulting in 50fps.

Do I miss something else? Or could it have changed with a recent firmware update?

Thank you for your hints,
greetings, Harry

*edit* attached a screen, where the disabled 100fps option could be seen.

Re: 120 FPS on NX1 Video?

This sort of "missing features that you remember were there" are usually related to the mode the camera is in (the pasm dial). Some options are missing or greyed out in some of them, which I sometimes find annoying even if it makes sense.
