NX200 problem - camera or lens?

Bought a used NX200 with 18-55 OIS lens. Wide angle shots look great, but zoomed shots look awful. I wonder if the OIS isn't working properly, but shooting at 200th of a second still not good. Can't get a decent shot. Photos look like those from a cheap compact. Have other users experienced similar problems?

Mine is fine. I'm shooting RAW, 'P', center spot for focus and exposure, mode 1 OIS.

It's not just you. Here's a sample OOC jpg on a fairly clear day at 52mm, f/5.6, 1/160s @ ISO 100. It's a blurry mess and no amount of editing the raw can fix it. You can blame turbulence or something since it's a fairly distant shot but the closer shots I took the same day at ~50mm look like garbage too. It's making me think about getting the 16-50PZ or the Rokinon 12mm and just taking those + 30mm + 45 or 50-200.

Well, it was taken with the lens wide open which wouldn't have helped the depth of field.  Still, everything is far enough away that one wouldn't expect that to matter.   In any case, the shutter speed of 1/160 indicates the light wasn't too good, so you wouldn't have had much choice other than to up the iso.  Even the hill or peak in the left foreground is not sharp but the one in the right background is worse still.  I have to assume it is a bad lens.

I haven't used my 18-55 much for landscapes but it doesn't seem as bad.  Here is one at 55mm and f/6.3.  This is an ooc jpeg from an NX10.  I'm not sure what I focused on but the windmill and concrete tank in the middle distance just left of centre seem reasonably sharp.  The trees on the horizon are not great but fair enough for a kit lens.  I took another shot at 18mm from the same spot and it is slightly sharper.

I think it has to be a problem with the lens. It may be decentered at the long end or damaged internally. I doubt the OIS could be responsible but you could check that by taking test shots with ois turned off. 1/200th should be plenty fast enough to eliminate camera shake. I have version 1 of the 18-55mm and it doesn't seem too bad. See my reply to link gaetz for a sample.

Lens must be defective if you consistently get bad shots at the tele end. From reviews the 18-55 should be quite good in the center on all the range.

With my 16-50 I sometimes get inexplicably blurry photos, but only rarely, must be something with the stabilization working against me.

Thanks guys. I bouth a 16-50mm PZ and tried it out today, unfortunately with similar results. Shots at 50mm look like blurry watercolour paintings, even at ISO 100. Will probably try another bodym, maybe NX1000.

What is it about the NX1000?  It just soldiers on and on, and everyone has such reverence for it. Even it's inexpensive 20-50 lens. Every so often I haul mine out and am always impressed. It just works! And love the UI. Maybe one day I'll get rid of all my sony's....

This looks somewhat better but it's still not very good. Surely the 20-50 can do better? I guess I could try comparison shots between the 18-55@45 and the 45, but if this is the best I can expect, why bother? I just need something compact in the 14-20mm range - unfortunately the 20mm is not much of an improvement.

60mm lens

20-50mm II @50mm

18-55mm II @55mm

18-200mm @ around 55mm

Similar focal length. 60mm, 20-50mm II, 18-55mm II, 18-200mm. F/5.6, Shutter speed 1/1000, ISO 200, NX200, OIS mode 2(except 20-50mm), JPEG. AWB. Straight from camera. No post processing.

Do you see the difference in sharpness?
