Birds with M.Zuiko 40-150 f2.8 pro + MC-14
7

Finally getting out and doing some serious birding since my Fz18 days and now with E-M1 with a Oly 40-150 f2.8 pro and teleconverter.
I'm Finding the lens more enjoyable each time I take it out. I bought this for general wildlife and as a bird fill until the 300 f4 comes out and find it pretty handy as a walk around sneaking up to birds. I'm not one who likes to carry a tripod or hide in a hide so the focal range may be a little short for small birds most the time but that's what makes it fun for me.
Here is just a handful of bird photo's iv'e taken recently with the 40-150 pro. I have seriously lagged behind sorting my photos out but eventually i'll start playing with my raws more often. these are just quickly PP from the JPEG in PS but I always shoot in RAW + JPEG.

Enjoy

Have you tried the DTC on the M.Zuiko 40-150 f2.8 pro + MC-14?...
1

Beautiful series Vass. Been eyeing that lens for a while but waiting for the 300/4.0 like you for birding and close ups. Have you tried the DTC witi the 40-150/2.8 + MC-14? That will be roughly 800 @ F4. If so, how is the IQ? If the IQ is more than good enough, I just might get the 40-150/2.8 + MC-14

Again, beautiful series and thanks for sharing.

Thanks. It takes a little practice and patience but definetly pays off at times

Thanks.

I have tried it with the 60mm f2.8 macro for birds and insects but found the fine detail a little to blurry for my liking so I never really attempted it on the 40-150 pro with TC

Very nice collection! It's always a treat to see birds I've not encountered before.

Re: Birds with M.Zuiko 40-150 f2.8 pro + MC-14

Nice assortment of birds for walking around. Are you satisfied with the OOF rendering from the lens/converter combo?

I've gotten some where the OOF area looks smooth, but more often than not, the OOF area looks distracting.

Maybe I added too much clarity or contrast in processing, but the background doesn't appeal to me here.

I do like the smooth background here. The cardinal was much closer to me than the blue jay, which helped blur the background more.

Both were shot with the 40-150 2.8 and MC-14.

I think my 100-300mm lens produced smoother looking OOF areas than the 40-150mm 2.8/MC-14 combo.

I wonder what others think.

Re: Birds with M.Zuiko 40-150 f2.8 pro + MC-14

I honestly can't say I get distracting background much myself. Maybe it's because I like to shoot f5.6, f5.0 at times which shows the background more clearly but still blurred, I rarely shoot at f4 unless I really need the extra shutter speed

Hi I am a newbie and just came across this thread. Can you tell me what the DTC is?

i just purchased the Olympus M1 Mii and trying to figure out which lens I should get for bird photos like those shown in the beginning

Your pictures are wonderful and truly captured the beauty and details.

I am a newbie and just came across your post when I googled for a comparison of the 40-150 f2.8 vs the 300 f.4

i noticed you mentioned waiting on the 300 to come out and if you purchased?  I literally just purchased the Olympus M1 M ii body and like you love birds and walking and shooting hand held.

Can you offer an opinion as to which I should purchase and why?

Digital teleconverter--basically a center crop and up-res that mimics using a longer lens. If shooting in RAW you also get an unmodified file to compare against.

Image links are broken and I can't see the original pics. Generally, one wants as much reach and speed as possible for birds. Staking out a feeder can accommodate shorter lenses but birds in flight or high in trees require lots of reach, such as the 300 pro or 100-400.

Cheers

Thank you so much. I am walking trails so birds will not be close. When you say 109-400 do you mean Panasonic Leica?

Do you have a preference out of the 3?  I am looking at used due to affordability

i appreciate your response and explanation

Happy to help!

Yes, the Pan-Leica 100-400. I do not own one but have admired many fine shots from it and have no qualms recommending giving one a look.

I have the Oly 300 Pro and MC14, which give the option of 300/4.0 or 420/5.8 without the convenience of a zoom. The bare lens is super sharp and images can be heavily cropped.

It's worth adding each of these lenses gives dual-IS with same-brand bodies, which is a big benefit with such long teles.

I'm more of a sports guy than a birder, but we have many fine birders on this forum successfully using both brands and also brand mixes. My current favorite tele setup  is the 300 Pro and E-M1ii. It gives a very good success rate once set up correctly for circumstances--I can't stress enough that learning the gear and the many, many settings is an absolute must, paired with tons of practice. You don't see shots like our friend Vass creates without lots of work.

On a budget, the Oly 75-300 and Panny 100-300 seem to work in good light that allows stopping them down a little. They're a notch below the two discussed above but easier on the wallet.

Good luck!

I assume broken links--either deleted or moved elsewhere.

Luckily, a search for the poster will turn up more excellent work you can actually see.

You have been extremely helpful. I appreciate all of your time.

Since coming from a Nikon DLSR to the Olympus OM-D m1 m2 I am already confused lol. After reading many reviews I purchased 2 books to read while practicing and assisting with setting up the additional program buttons   I want to do it right the first time around lol

a d choosing the right lens as this will be my last system

again I appreciate your thoughts and help
