Samsung NX300M + 16-50 PZ lens giving blurry pictures

Hi All,

Very recently I bought Samsung NX300M + 16-50 PZ lens camera, it is working fine but I have below problem. I am not understanding they are any manufacuturing problems or I need to change any settings. I am very new to DSLR cameras

1. In auto mode moving objects are getting blurred. Suppose if i am sitting on a chair and saying Hi, by moving my hand, then only my hand gets blurred reamaining object coming fine.

If I tried same picture with my normal compact digital cannon 8 mega pixel camera picture is coming perfectly. Please let me know, is it something problem in camera or do i have to make any changes to the settings.

2. Again in auto mode if I am focusing on one object background is getting blurred automatically without making any changes to the settings. But sometimes if I dont want this effect what settings I need to change.

Please provide me your advice on this.

Thanks,

Krishna.

Hi.  You can rest assured that the 16-50 lens is one of the better lenses in its class.  As you suspected, the blurriness is probably due to your settings.  You can download the free Samsung NX app for your phone.  It includes several free guidebooks for new photographers.  Have fun!

1. The hand is blurry because the shutter speed to slow. The slower the shutter speed, the more motion blur you will get. If you're in auto mode, the camera is going to choose the shutter speed and it won't have any idea what you're trying to capture. It will pick a slow shutter speed if it isn't well lit. If you want to control motion blur try using Shutter Priority mode. You can pick the shutter speed and the camera will pick the other two settings.

For example: 1/60 shutter will get motion blur, 1/200 will get less.

2. You are seeing a smaller Depth Of Field. Having a smaller DOF allows you to isolate a subject to keep it in focus while the out of focus stuff becomes less distracting. If you want to increase the DOF to keep more in focus, pick a smaller aperture (a high number).

Thanks Jeff,

Is there anyway can we increase shutter speed for auto mode?

Now is the time to learn some of your cameras other shooting modes. All of which will allow you to use higher shutter speeds.

No, Auto mode is very limited in user input; with camera on and in Auto mode hit the Fn key on the right back of the camera. It will show you your options; I believe you will see the shutter & aperture options greyed out (not available).

Now, change the mode dial on the top of the camera to any of the other settings; hitting the Fn button now will show you changing options. Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun using the other modes. In the camera manual there are some good explanations on how changing aperture, shutter speed &/or ISO can improve your photo.

Auto mode is just that: automatic. YOU don't have much control at all. Once you get out of auto mode you will notice the quality of your photos get better as you are able to control what the images look like instead of the camera telling you what they should look like

There are basically 3 settings that control how your photo looks: Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO

S mode allows you to choose the shutter speed, the camera will choose the other 2. Pick this mode if you want to freeze motion or allow it to blur (like running water).

A mode allows you to choose the aperture, the camera will choose the other 2. Pick this mode if you want to control how shallow or deep your depth of field is (how little or how much is in focus).

You will find your 300M pretty amazing once you take control of the camera and not let it control you...so to speak

Re: Samsung NX300M + 16-50 PZ lens giving blurry pictures

Hi All,

I thought as per your suggestions I found the solution in Program mode or Aperature mode by setting minimum shutter speed. However I see it is working fine only in good light, it is not working in the night time. What I mean is in P or A modes morning time it is showing minimum shutter speed as 250 which I set, but night time it is coming automatically 80 or 60, not considering my setup. Please provide me the solution for this problem now.

At the same time I tried shutter priority also but image is not containing light, if I increase ISO spots are coming up. So don't know what is the solution for this

Thanks,

Krishna.

The solution is faster glass or flash

The kit lens has an aperture range of f3.5 (16mm - zoomed out) to f5.6 (50mm - zoomed in) The reason you're having more problems in low light is it is simply too dark for the camera to get the image you want with the small apertures of the kit lens and the shutter speeds you're picking. It is all about increasing or decreasing certain values if you are NOT using flash. It is a tradeoff...

In lower light: 1) lower the shutter speed to allow light in longer (downside- motion blur, camera shake) OR 2) increase the ISO to make the camera more sensitive to light (downside- noise "spots") OR 3) increase the aperture to let in more light (the kit lens doesn't open very wide) so  something like a 30mm f2, 20mm 2.8, 16mm 2.4, 45mm 1.8 are lenses that let in more light than the kit lens OR 4) add light with flash or some other artificial source.

If you are trying to take a picture of something still at night, such as a building or bridge or statue, you can put your camera on something steady like a tripod, a bench, the hood of your car, etc, and pick a very slow shutter speed that will allow you to pick the ISO that won't give you too much noise (ISO spots).

Re: Samsung NX300M + 16-50 PZ lens giving blurry pictures

Actually I thought minimum shutter speed is not working accurately because of the lighting. But it is not the case even today morning I tested it but no luck, minimum shutter speed is not considering into the count for P & A modes. I think this is whole problem why blurry pictures are coming for Auto mode also.

Any idea or procedure to correct it or is this manufacturing problem?

Re: Samsung NX300M + 16-50 PZ lens giving blurry pictures

The camera will indeed override minimum shutter speed if you have it too high to get something reasonable. If you see the "shaky hand symbol" it is telling you the shutter speed is too slow. What you're running into is not a defect, but the camera trying to tell you that the settings you're picking aren't giving it enough leave-way to get a decent exposure. You can switch to all manual to force it to do what you want, but then you'd see why it was trying to "tell you something"

Re: Samsung NX300M + 16-50 PZ lens giving blurry pictures

Late , I know , in answering, but I just came across your posting.

Try this:

Set your camera to Manual (M)

Set the shutter speed to 1/125

Set the aperture to f8

Set the ISO to Auto

Now take a picture.

If you are using flash you will need to experiment with the ISO setting,  Auto ISO and flash confuse each other.

Best of luck!
