I want to back up sd cards on an external hard drive... but without a laptop :-/

Hi everyone,

Are there any solutions to back up sd cards on an external hard drive without a laptop? Its seems hard with tablets, even Windows tablets - unless it's the expensive Surface pro 3.

Photobank / hyperdrives seem stuck in the 1990's when you look at their price! Also, many customers report that theyy are quite flimsy.

This is mostly for when I travel. I worry about losing all my pictures if my sd cards get stolen or if they fail and stop working. Backing up on a small hard drive (like WD Passport) would limit the risk of losing everything. Obviously, a laptop would be too heavy to carry around.

Thanks for reading.

It's possible, here is a WD hard drive that has wireless capability as well as an SD card slot.

Amazing! Thank you! It's impressive how much technology they've managed to squeeze in there.

Great reply, thanks.

I was surprised too, and the price is fairly reasonable compared to similar products. Warning though, BH isn't shipping anything till Passover is done.

I'm in the uk, and I found it on Amazon uk. There is even a 1tb model available, which is fine as I'm not interested in streaming audio or video.

Used WD My Passport for 5 month, and it´s bin a plearsure all the way. Only drawback is, that i cannot copy from disc to the sd card. ( it would be nice to keep a copy of camera/lens software here , as a backup, in case of....)

I forgot to mention. You can store jpg. tiff. and raw files on this devise. But you only can view jpg. and tiff. on laptops and Iphones using WD My cloud software.

Also for the Fuji you can use the app with an Ipad or phone to backup your Jpgs even full size. I think it should be enough for backing up.

Do you mean backing up pictures on the ipad/phone memory? They don't have much memory, though.

I think that's ok, I'm really not interested in the streaming feature of the device. I'll just transfer all files to the PC and cloud when I'm back home.

No. But you can check the pictures on Ipad/Iphone. Nice feature if you don´t have a computer with you.

Re: I want to back up sd cards on an external hard drive... but without a laptop :-/

Well some phones support up to 128 Gb SD cards. This should be enought to backup Jpgs from a trip. Also the Ipad comes in 64Gb but is kind of expensive. HDD will do also but you might end up keeping it in the same bag with the SD cards/camera. So phone could make more sense as it is usually in your pocket separately from the other stuff Backup means nothing if all 10 media you use are in the same place. Loss/steal/fire anything that happens usually will happen to all the items that you store in the same place.

I have a 128 ipad and use the card reader to pull off photos from the day to see how well/poorly things went. Not uber speedy but it works.

Re: I want to back up sd cards on an external hard drive... but without a laptop :-/

I do it, for one year now, with my Samsung Android Tablet.
Using a OTG USB Hub (not the original Samsung. An other one which I bought for around 15 Euros on Amazon (Germany)) where I can plug the SDs directly in and which has 2 seperate USB Ports for HDs etc.
I can copy my pictures from the SD Card to the memory of the tablet and, if I connect the Hub to power, I can connect my WD Passport on it and copy the pics from the SD to the HD (JPG and RAF).
Further I have a app on the Tablet where I can view the RAF files and the JPGs.
I think, if you have a tablet and don't like to carry so much stuff with you (backpacking, motorcycling....) it will be hard to find a cheaper and safer solution.

I take a small netbook plus some flash drives.

I have the 1TB one and i Love it! It's not the fastest to backup, but it's still so worth it. The WiFi works great as well. Highly recommend it.

Edit: The different variants gets physically thicker as you go up in storage size. IE: my 1TB:er is thinner than the 2TB:er. But they're all still very portable ofc.

The above mentioned HD is still more convenient, and doesn't need a tablet or laptop. But it do cost a bit ofc, but it's very much worth it, imo. And the WiFi and USB on it makes it perfect for basically everything (Tablet, Phone, Computer).

Re: I want to back up sd cards on an external hard drive... but without a laptop :-/

I agree, the WD WiFi HD is a great tool but the reason I prefer the way with my tablet is because I like to examine my copys and like to view the pics on the tabletscreen. (give keywords, sort out........).

But there a lot of other things I like to do when I am travelling so I like to have my tablet with me.

Btw my solution (OTG USB Hub and any small, portable HD) works with my smartphone too.

That sounds really good. What hub do you have? Last time I bought a powered hub, it was not working well at all.

How do you know...
1

...whether the back up has worked?

You really need a back up on a device designed for photography, not a generic wireless hard drive. You need some sort of display to see the filing system at minimum.
