Hi folks,

looking for a little guidance.

Background. I have a 6D with a 24-70 f4, 40 2.8 and 50 1.4 and a range of longer L glass

I am looking for advise as to purchase a 35 1.4 or a 35 f2 for the nigh time walk around lens.

For day time I might sell the 24-70 f4 and buy the 24-105 STM 3.5.-5.6.

Thoughts please?

Ian M

Please forget the Canon and consider the Sigma 35mm 1.4. Newer design, sharper images, better image quality, better value.

Your claims is completely false.

I have never found a wide angle prime sharper than the 35L. The sigma you mentioned is too soft, not razor sharp. None of the 8 copies I tried came close to the 35L.

The Sigma pounds the 35L "ta powda" when it comes to sharpness.

David, how so? do you have link to illustrate that? how about kindly posting some photos to prove that "pounding to powda" statement, as you put it? thank you.

My experience is quite opposite, I have never have a fast 35mm that is softer than my 35L when shooting wide open, I am a prime lens user for the most part, but i only bought and sold 35L twice, not 8 times, so my experience on this one is very limited, LOL. and as soon as the Sigma 35 Art came out I grabbed one right away thinking I can't possibly have any softer 35mm lens, right? and I was right, it was SHARP! it even auto focuses fine on all 3 of my Canon bodies, now I have one for my Canon and one for my Nikon platform, works great on the D800E and just shot that on the D4s last week and no issue at all, sold the 35 F1.4G right away as well. May even sell the Zeiss 35 F1.4 because I use it less and less after I got the Sigma.

Here is a handheld snap shot at F1.4, 1/15 shutter speed, consider the hand shake effect after few beers with 1/15 shutter speed on a 36MP sensor, maybe I have low standard, I will just call it a sharp lens.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ($900 at BHphoto)

...

Canon 35mm f/1.4 ($1480 at BHphoto)

......

Canon 35mm f/2.0 IS ($550 at BHphoto)

.....

At f/4 and above, they are all about the same.

I expect that Canon's 35mm f/1.4 would provide better subject isolation at large apertures within the centre of the frame simply b/c the resolution is so poor away from the centre.  This could be very useful for street photography.

Canon's 35mm f/2 IS and Sigma's 35mm f/1.4 look very similar to me within the common range.  The Sigma has amazing resolution wide open.

The Sigma is ~2x the cost of the the f/2 IS, and Canon's f/1.4 is ~3x the cost of the f/2 IS.  For this massive difference in cost, I view the differences in optics small; furthermore, if out and about at night in dark alleyways - I'd go with the f/2 IS.  But that's just me.

The 35IS is also significantly lighter than the other two. On the 6D, the combo comes to 1,105 grams. Nice and light for "street" with just a wrist strap.

Have you read the comparo's between the two? You should...

Yes, plenty of them. They seem unanimous that the sigma is sharper. Can you link me to one that says otherwise?

Everything I've seen has the Sigma coming up the winner.

The reason that I have never tried the Sigma is because the place Sigma comes up short is quality control.  Too many people report having to go through more than one copy to get a good one.  Bab

Except that at f/2, the 35/1.4 is more f/1.4 because it vignettes considerably less at that aperture. Also, I have seen some disturbing bokeh from the 35/2 in the transition zone. All 35mm primes are problematic there but the 35/2 seems to be more so.

We are on a cruise which finishes in Singapore. It does visit Penang for a long day and late evening before leaving.

Envious. We are planning a visit to Penang later this year. My picks in Georgetown are:

1. Fatt Tze Mansion

2. Peranakan Mansion / Baby Nyonya Museum

3. Eastern & Oriental Hotel. One of the four famous Sarkies Bros. hotels (in addition to the Raffles in Singapore, the Majapahit in Surabaya and the Strand in Rangoon)

4. Street life and street food. Try the Penang Laksa which is different from the Singaporean Katong Laksa (recommended also)

Can you tell how much I like Penang?

Malaka: three hour bus-ride from Sing. Worth a visit for its Malay, Dutch and Brit significance.

When I tell you the itinerary you might not be.

3 days at sea from Perth to Bali, hopefully not far from the coast so there is at least some bird etc life.

2 days at sea to Kuala Lumpur. 8am to 7pm

Overnight to Penang 8am to 11pm

overnight to Langkawi 8am to 6pm

Overnight to Phuket 7am 6pm

one day at sea to Singapore.

No, I think you did mention you had moved.

There is a reverse cruise. I think this will be the last cruise for this boat for some time, it has had a bad run and is going off the sea for about 3 months for a refit
