Rank the lenses available for Samsung NX!

Interesting. I find the 18-200 brilliant in its own way. For me, some of its flaws can be considered 'character'. I use it all the time with my Galaxy NX. But yes, from a pure IQ standpoint, it is not up to par with something like the Panasonic 14-140ii in a similar range. Yet, I love the pictures I get with the 18-200. Busy bokeh and all. BTW, mine is sharp all the way to 200, at least in the center.

On my NX500, I love all the small primes and small zooms usually in the following order;

30mm, 45mm (don't use the 3D feature), 16mm, 20mm, 12-24mm, 16-50mm.

On the N1 the 16-50mm S is super-glued on.

I have to say, even the standard kit zooms (which can be awful on some systems) are more that adequate in most scenarios.

I am about to join the NX world with a NX-500. My needs are not that sophisticated. Besides the kit lens, what lenses/adaptions are recommended (hopefully not too costly) for:

Macro - toy photography

Landscape - travel photography

Portrait - people photography

I think Samsung have got all those bases well covered with good NX lenses. However, for landscapes where speed is often not an issue, don't forget you've got literally hundreds of great lenses that can be adapted if you can live with manual focus. I personally have my other foot in the Pentax camp and love using their DA Limited series on an NX500.

Samsung had the best small primes and that's the most important point for me. The zooms are OK, but you need the very best lenses in order to beat the image quality of a modern smartphone.

I find the 30mm the most useful in the range. I wish it was a tad sborter in focal length (like 26mm) but it's an excellent lens anyway. The slow and somewhat noisy autofocus doesn't bother me and I don't do video. Even wide open, it delivers (at least in the center of the frame) and at f/5.6, it's close to perfection.

The 45mm is even better optically and the autofocus is fast and silent (for people who care). It's a shame that the focal length is too short. Now, I use it mainly on the NX Mini. A compact 60mm would have been my dream lens. The 60mm Macro is good optically, has stabilization but is way too bulky for my taste.

I have never tried the 20mm but I will if I can find a good one in my vicinity.

The 16mm is a good lens but it's better with the distortion correction disabled (when enabled, it makes fhe corners fuzzy).

The 10mm fisheye is another jewel. Small, lightweight, with good sharpness for a fisheye and superb colors.

Right now, I am traveling around France with two NX bodies (one with the 10mm and one with the 30mm) and one NX Mini (with the 45mm) in a small waist pack. I also have medium format and 35mm equipment at home but the quality I get from my Samsung gear is close enough and the weight/bulk benefit is quite appreciable when traveling.

Cheers!

I understand is the only "do it all" lens of the system, but I am getting better results from the 16-50PZ and the 50-200mm..It seems like a video orientated lens, especially for the older 1080p 20megapixels sensors.

About the 3D,  does it actually work, any special post-processing needed? Is it even worth it?

I'm reliably informed that it does. It takes two images that you can view side-by-side on a suitable TV/Projector and glasses. No post-processing necessary. I've never tried it out even though I've got a 3D capable projector - just seems a bit gimmicky. There's a review out there that give some examples.

It does work, it splits the lens into 2 drastically reducing the aperture and you have to have the subject a certain distance away for the effect to work, and have good light.

Post processing is required but it's not too difficult. Is it worth it? I tried it once and was impressed but haven't tried it since. The one and only time was about 6 years ago 🤣

Thanks for correcting and adding to my post. I was quoting from an old review that I read a long time ago. Should have rechecked. As I said I've never used it in 3D mode and if I could source an non-3D version I'd buy it as a back-up.

Actually you may be right about it not needing any processing if you view on a 3D tv. I didn't have a 3D tv so had to post process to enable it to be viewed with those old school 3D glasses!

It works quite well but only for close-up or portrait work (because of the short interpupillary distance). I use it from time to time to shoot images that I mainly view on a smartphone or tablet equipped with a 3D lenticular screen displaying images in 3 dimensions that can be viewed without any special glasses.

Here's a recent thread with images taken in 3D mode (the images can be viewed in parallel or cross-eyed mode) :

For anyone also searching, I find the 30mm is fantastic as an all-rounder and is my go-to. Images are sharp with excellent contrast.

Yep, it is, though autofocus is slow and not that reliable. I prefer manual. The 45 is great, too, though I nearly never use it.

Thousands of images with the NX500, still going strong. Most used is the 12-24, than 30, than 60 macro. Only thing I miss is antishake, and that they stopped development.

Cheers

As was already written, it works with significantly reduced light intake and vignettes. I've got the 2D 45mm first, and later the 3D, and I think it's mainly a novelty toy.

I tried recording video with it once, but the result was very disappointing, maybe because I was moving too fast, and I had the impression that the two half frames for left and right are not taken at the same time, causing headache when watching in 3D.

My biggest issue with the 3D lens though is that there is no AF/MF switch, as the physical switch is used for 2D/3D instead.
