Anyone else have AF problems with the 24mm STM lens?

Late last year I tried two copies of the new 24mm STM lens on my 650D. Both times the AF was not consistent, actually was pretty consistent being a bit "off". But it was dead-on using live view. I returned both lenses. FYI, my 40mm STM lens AF is dead-on with my 650D.

By now, there are several reviews posted about this lens (none here) and I've not yet read anything about AF problems.

Re: Anyone else have AF problems with the 24mm STM lens?

Yes, I am having some sort of back/front focus issue on my 100d. I put lens on my 7d and set about doing a dot test and it was perfect. But still on the 7d it presents the occasional mis focused shot. I sent the 100d body with lens to canon for checking and possible calibration, and they returned it promptly reporting that everything was up to spec. I havent been using it much (24 efs) but I'm sure the problem still exists. I Think it may be my technique more than the lens, who knows..

no issues with mine. I use it on my T3i.

Is is it not a contrasty lens?  It misses focus on subjects with little contrast to work with such as in low light?  I think that is the issue with my 50mm f1.4 (and it isn't stabilized).  My 50mm lens also works better in live view because focus is achieved using different methods than contrast.

How well does it focus on well lit subjects with high shutter speeds?

I really didn't try that. I only tested it in fairly low light, similar to what I would find at an indoor party where it would be a good "social" lens. As I said, my 40mm STM lens has no problem with AF in that same situation.

You should try in better lighting.  The focusing accuracy at very shallow DOF's (to test focus accuracy) should improve.  Also, I noticed the non stabilized lenses really needed fast shutter speeds to get things sharp like a stabilized lens can.  Handheld sharpness with non-stabilized lenses is a matter of opinion on what is acceptable motion blur.

My 50mm f1.4 would have problems indoors low light.  Just where I thought a f1.4 lens would excel.  It could get nice photos but it doesn't always work that way.  Contrast just falls off too fast.  I think my lenses chromatic distortion issues makes the problem with missing fine focus worse.  Can a camera achieve fine focus, by contrast methods, if the lens is throwing color fringing into the mix?  I think that is another reason the UD elements in the "L" lenses are worth the money (if you have it).  How is the chromatic distortion on the 24mm?

So, auto focusing techniques and limitations is another skill a photographer needs.  And why the 7D mkII various focusing settings seem pretty cool.

Re: Anyone else have AF problems with the 24mm STM lens?

- One of my main uses for that lens would be in lower-light social situations. So if it won't reliably focus in that setting, it won't work for me.

- The shutter speed was fine. I used flash to make sure the shutter speed was fast enough. It was just focusing in front of or behind the supposed focal point.

- Of course I could get another copy and use it in Live View where it focused perfectly.

Re: Anyone else have AF problems with the 24mm STM lens?

Problems here to, both on Canon EOS 800 and 650. Functions great on both cameras in live view but not through viewfinder.

Both cameras functions as expected (good) with other Canon lenses, so maybe the lens is in some way badly calibrated from factory?

Re: Anyone else have AF problems with the 24mm STM lens?

Not an uncommon problem with lenses. It's why the D series cameras have micro focus adjustment, but Canon won't add this firmware feature to the Rebel cameras. Sold 2 Rebels to buy a 70d just for MFA to correct 3 lenses that I thought were just soft.

Bit of a misleading statement, outside of the USA the cameras that you call Rebels also have a D in their model numbers. It is most (but not all) of the xxD and xD models that have micro focus adjustment, the xxxxD and xxxD do not.

In this era of international communications, using different names or numerical names for the same devices is not helpful. Confusing to me at least
