DP1 permanent lens extension mod question

As the new owner of a Dp1s, I have heard about the wiring mod that can be done to the Dp1 and Dp2 cameras to keep the lens permanently extended, so as to avoid the motor/wire wearing out problem, but what isn't clear is can this mod be done to remedy the problem after the lens has already malfunctioned, or is it solely a preventative measure beforehand?

Ooh! This would be awesome if it worked. I have a DP1 that died after 16000 cycles with its lens extended and something rattling around inside. Getting it up and running again would be cool.

A not-uncommon problem for this series.  Sometimes it is just a power cable.

Bad news, that mode will not fix your problem.

Rattling noise created by rear lens element. Inside lens there is optical sensor for positioning of rear element when that sensor or ribbon cable dies step motor just completely unscrews rear element.

I tried to replace it but without luck. Or aftermarket cable was not good or i just damaged it or sensor during desoldering/soldering affair.
