Differences between sx700 and sx710

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a compact travel camera. I doubt between the sx700 and the sx710. I looked on the internet to find the differences. But I couldn't find the correct/complete list.

I know about 2 differences:

  • sensor (16MP <> 20MP)
  • video mode 24p added

Are there more? On some sites I found that the sx700 has no smartphone remote control and no AF active tracking?

I would go for the sx700 because it's cheaper and I expect better picture quality (only 16MP on a 1/2.3" sensor). Except if some nice features/functions are missing.

I also had a look at the Panny Lumix TZ70 and the Nikon S9900 but the picture quality is really worse than the Canons. The Nikon P7800 was another option but it seems to be very slow. If you have other suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks!

I would try to find some comparisons of the images for the two models, I bought a SX600 which has the 16mp sensor and it has way more noise than the other 12mp models I own, so I would never buy the 20mp models.

Here is my thoughts on this after buying the SX600: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/55244936

Re: Differences between sx700 and sx710

If I'm remembering correctly, the 710 is a step down in IQ due to cramming more pixels. I could be remembering incorrectly, but seem to recall that was the result from at least one review site.

I think that's a good decision. I had an SX700, two of them actually, but sold both and opted to buy a used SX280 HS because the 12.1mp was far superior to the 16mp of the SX700, and performed better at high ISOs. Granted, the SX280 had battery issues with video but since I don't use my PowerShots for video, it wasn't a problem at all for me. I can't imagine that 20mp on the same sensor is going to produce great results. I'll be most interested in your thoughts about the camera.

Hi,

I have a sx700 camera and want to say that you can control your camera by smart phones via wifi, you just need to install the camera window app on your smart phone. About focusing it has a nice AF treacking.

Re: Differences between sx700 and sx710

Well, I had a SX700 which I had to abandon due to a scratch in the front element. I bought a SX710 and I don't know why my photos became far better since then.
Perhaps I improved my technique...
What I fear now is to change to a SX720 for the optics have changed.
I've bought an Olympus TG-5 that has much more features than the SX710 but testing them side by side I preferred the Canon and handed the Olympus to my son.
BTW, I do mostly close-up/macro on insects.
