Jon,

I thank you for the detailed reply. I will study it further and follow the suggestions your note contains.

I looked on Amazon and noticed the Canon G16. However, there was no mention of the camera in your reply. Was there a reason ?

The articulated screen on the G11 is nice, but I have to admit that I don't seem to need it very often.

Refurbs by Canon are, I believe, given a one-year warranty. I'd probably go for the G16 at this point, though we have a G15 and really like it. I think you'll find either the G15 or G16 a find upgrade to your G11.

Then there's always the question of when the G17 will appear

Later: I see you went for the G16 -- Excellent choice, Thomas!

Re: What to purchase after the G11 ?

I own a G15 (image quality more or less similar to G16) and use a G12 at work (I believe same sensor as G11).  I'm not so sure at low ISO's that you'll really see much of an image improvement, certainly I don't think anything that will exclaim a "wow" factor.  If I wanted noticeable image improvement I'd have to move up to the G7X.  Yes the camera will excel in other areas, better high ISO performance, much faster speed of operation and the fast lens will allow you to get shots you could not get otherwise with your G11.  For those reasons I would take the G16 over a G12 or lower series in a heartbeat but for a big image improvement?  I'm not so sure.  What image improvement I think you will notice is due to the fast lens allowing you to keep the shutter speed up and the ISO lower in many situations that would not be able to do with the G11.

I hope you'll share your experiences as you get accustomed to the G16.

All I'm really looking for in upgrading from a G 11 is higher picture quality. The G 11 does a good job, but I have to spend time making adjustments to almost every picture I take. I hope more of the G 16 pictures will be suitable for sharing and printing right out of the camera.

For a travel camera, I don't see how a person can go wrong with this G 16.

If I have any interesting findings or impressions as I use it more, I'll post again.

Okay, hope to hear what you think of it.  I'm curious about how the out of camera jpegs are.

thanks,

I've had my G15 for a couple years now. It works great for me as an all-around camera, doing everything well. I've managed to drop it three times on concrete walks but it is still tight and still taking great shots for me. The only sign that it was dropped is a tiny nick on the lens barrel. It is a super rugged camera for sure, remarkable. Love it!
