What to purchase after the G11 ?

I own a number of Canon cameras including the G9 and the G11.  I also have several larger Canon cameras and 6 or 7 additional Canon lenses for them.

The G11 is my travel camera, and it has served me well on many trips. I now have the urge to purchase another Power Shot ( smaller travel camera ) and would like your opinion of what I should consider buying.

I have not been active on this Forum for some time and realize I am attempting to take a shortcut in learning what is currently being recommended and discussed here.

Here is the bottom line. What do you suggest for a future purchase for a guy who loves everything about the G11, but thinks it's time to purchase another travel camera ?

I appreciate your time in reading this message and will value your advise.

Since you've been happy with the G11 might consider going to Canon Refurbished PowerShots and look at the G15 Refurb $249.99 or possibly the Refurb G1 X $329.29; and read DPR's G15 and G1 X reviews.

If you like the G11's controls and articulating LCD Display the G1 X would be a larger (sensor and size wise) version of the G11.

Personally if had the spare $$ I would like to get the G1 X at this $ for it's low light/high ISO performance.

For considerations other than Canon may want to browse through DPR's Enthusiast compact camera roundup (2014) .

You can use DPR's New Studio Shot Comparison Tool to compare different cameras IQ at various ISO settings.

Another site to compare two different cameras IQ is at Imaging Resource Comparometer; they have a larger selection of cameras but not as flexible/easy to use as DPR's (i.e., DPR can compare 4 cameras at a time and able to change ISO settings while viewing the four images)

Re: What to purchase after the G11 ?

Jon,

I thank you for the detailed reply. I will study it further and follow the suggestions your note contains.

I looked on Amazon and noticed the Canon G16.  However, there was no mention of the camera in your reply.  Was there a reason ?

The articulated screen on the G11 is nice, but I have to admit that I don't seem to need it very often.

I have never purchased a refurbished camera and would probably be a bit hesitant. What is your opinion ?

Mainly for the price difference between the Refurb G15 and new G16. You'll need to read reviews on the G15 and G16 to determine for yourself if the G16's newer features are worth the additional costs to you. From the G15 and G16 images I've seen the G16's IQ overall the same as the G15 -- in the DPR's New Studio Shot Comparison Tool link I provided in my previous post I included the G15 & G16 for comparison.

Awhile back the only reason I did not buy Canon Refurb items was not because of being Refurb, but because Canon only provided a 90-Day warranty and there was generally not a big enough difference between Canon's Refurb price and the price of the new item from online resellers (e.g., B&H Photo) to forgo the full 1-Year warranty with the new item. Canon now provides a 1-Year Warranty with their Refurb equip just as if you bought it new.

I've purchased a refurb 18-135 IS STM and a S110, both item were like new and have worked flawlessly. Items are shipped in a regular box well protected.

Canon periodically has discounts on refurb prices and free shipping, e.g., during last year Christmas holidays I bought the refurb S110 for $134.95 + tax.

Hi, I went from the G11 to the G1X and it was a good move. To be honest they are similar in some respects. Granted, G1X is bigger, but it has the articulated LCD screen and the bigger sensor. I haven't really looked back. The G11 is a good cam though! 😃

You didn't mention your video needs but some Pannys are now doing 4k.  Ive heard folks say refurbs are better than new, better testing I guess.

I thank you all for the replies.  It looks like I am down to the G16 or the G1X.  Both seem to be great cameras.

I never thought about purchasing a refurbished camera. Are they purchased directly from Canon ?  I would appreciate a link.

Many thanks.

If travel is your main reason for buying, why not an S series Canon compact. The S120 is the newest and S110 is available refurbished directly from Canon. Just Google Canon refurb for the site. They usually offer free shipping, but not always. and they have sales as mentioned--the G15 refurb was $198. during the holiday sale after Christmas. They had the 1 yr warranty and free shipping at that time too. I am waiting for a repeat of that sale to buy a G15 to add to my S95 and new G7x--which is smaller than the G15-16 and larger than the S series...........and another to consider in my view. Happy Shopping!

Re: Canon Refurbished PowerShots Site Link

Jim and Jon,

Thank you both for the link. I don't see any G16's listed on the refur site.

I see a new G16 on Amazon and B & H for $449 and $325 on Abe's of Maine.

How can there be such a difference in price ?

Because it's a grey market item -- steer clear from Abe's of Maine.

See my post at http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/55479500

Need to be careful of online resellers to verify they are a reputable reseller.

Re: What to purchase after the G11 ?

Thomas,

I can offer another vote in favor of the G1 X.  I purchased mine a month after the Canon release, at the full retail price.  The large sensor has truly unbelievable low light capability, making ISO 6400 very useable in low light conditions, with very low noise, requiring little to no post processing on those images.  The detail that the large sensor can capture is just unbelievable the first time you see it on a PC monitor - it's just really breath taking, and rather shocking at the same time.  For travel photos, you might not particularly need the low light capability, but you will appreciate the large sensor fine detail abilities of this camera.  One other caveat that has been mentioned many times for this camera.  Because of the large sensor, the G1 X close subjects requires switching to Macro mode.  This becomes second nature after a very short time.  I like many others really appreciate the swivel LCD, and would not really want a camera without one.  This LCD is very bright, in all lighting conditions.  But, for those rare extremely bright conditions, the camera also has a view finder.  The G1 X is an excellent all-purpose camera, well suited for travel photos, but also family photos, and other casual photography.  It can perform very well as a professional photography tool, as many others have mentioned.  I still enjoy my G1 X, like the day I got it.

Re: What to purchase after the G11 ?

I moved from my G9 and G11 to a Canon refurb G15, and have been very happy with the "upgrade".  Like you, I thought the swivel LCD of the G11 was great for a while, then decided my G9's smaller size was my preferred choice.  The G15 is smaller like my G9, but with better performance, especially at higher ISOs.  I also carry a Clearviewer to give me the effect of a large EVF with the LCD. The G16 is supposed to be faster in capturing a shot, but I'm no longer interested in paying full price for a new camera.  Canon refurbs are now my choice of "new" cameras.

I passed my G9 to my wife, and my G11 went to my grandkids.

Re: What to purchase after the G11 ?

I thank you all for your comments and opinions. There were many good suggestions, but after considering all of the input, I ordered a Canon G 16 from B & H Photo today.  With the free case and 32 GB card, it wasn't such a bad price.

I have the G 9 and the G 11 and both have served me well. I just figure that I would be best served by staying with what I know and trust.  In addition, I really like the feel of the G series cameras.

Glad you made your choice, and I think it's a good one--as I REALLY wanted to answer flippantly--G12,15,16!  all this time!

Re: What to purchase after the G11 ?

Kim,

The G 16 arrived from B & H Photo today.  I have not had much of an opportunity to play with it, but my first impressions are very favorable.  It feels good in my hand, and seems to be built well and solid.

As my post said, I have the G9 and the G 11, so getting use to the controls is very easy.  As far as the wi fi feature, I can't see myself making much use of that, but time will tell.

All I'm really looking for in upgrading from a G 11 is higher picture quality. The G 11 does a good job, but I have to spend time making adjustments to almost every picture I take. I hope more of the G 16 pictures will be suitable for sharing and printing right out of the camera.

For a travel camera, I don't see how a person can go wrong with this G 16.

If I have any interesting findings or impressions as I use it more, I'll post again.

Jim,

Believe me, I did look at the G 12 and G15. However, after 56 years of marriage, I've found that it's better to skip a few versions.
